Defense Acquisition University Awarded Top Honors for Fast ROI and Companywide Success of Client Backup Initiative

PALO ALTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–April 18, 2006–Atempo, Inc., the leader in data protection and storage security for trusted information lifecycle management (ILM), today announced that Atempo LiveBackup customer, Defense Acquisition University, won first place in the Storage Reliability and Data Recovery category of SNW’s Spring 2006 “Best Practices in Storage” awards program. Finalists were evaluated by a panel of judges based on case study submissions that profiled the company, its IT department and storage networking challenges. The Defense Acquisition University (DAU) won their category with a case study detailing the unique benefits of LiveBackup’s innovative continuous data protection technology.
“We are indeed honored to win Storage Networking World’s `Best Practices in Storage Reliability and Data Recovery’ award,” said Colonel Ron Hayne, director of operations support group at Defense Acquisition University. “As the lead proponent of DAU’s client backup initiative, I am pleased with the success and cost-effectiveness of our companywide backup program for desktops and laptops.”

Prior to their client backup initiative, Defense Acquisition University had suffered multiple hard drive failures and was faced with prohibitive recovery costs. DAU recouped their investment in client backup software and hardware in the first five months of deployment: per-incident costs for lost and corrupted files dropped by 90%; yearly help desk costs per PC declined by 83%; and per-incident costs for total system hard drive crashes dropped by more than 50%. In addition to a fast return on their investment, DAU’s client backup initiative also provided more efficient utilization of file server disk space, self-serve file recovery tools that enable users to solve many problems by themselves, the ability to quickly build up new machines from bare metal restore, and a safe method for protecting years’ worth of teaching and reference materials stored on desktops and laptops.

“We extend our congratulations to the Defense Acquisition University for winning the Storage Reliability and Data Recovery category,” said Stephen M. Terlizzi, vice president of global marketing at Atempo. “This marks the second year in a row that a LiveBackup customer has won top honors in SNW’s Best Practices in Storage awards program, and it certainly underscores the valuable role of continuous data protection for client backup.”

“Storage is a crucial element in any company’s IT strategy. The organizations and professionals we honored with these awards have demonstrated the ability to devise and implement solutions that ensure the integrity and availability of critical data, advancing the larger goals of the organization,” said Ron Milton, executive vice president at Computerworld.

DAU, based in Fort Belvoir, Va., provides certification training, performance consulting and continuous learning courses for military and civilian acquisition personnel within the Department of Defense. Its mission is to provide practitioner training, career management and services to enable the AT&L community to make smart business decisions and deliver timely and affordable capabilities to the warfighter. DAU protects approximately 700 desktops and laptops with Atempo’s LiveBackup software.

LiveBackup is completely transparent backup for Windows desktop and laptop PCs in the global enterprise. The only true continuous data protection solution available for workstations, LiveBackup works automatically without interfering with end-user productivity. LiveBackup provides self-serve file recovery, comprehensive disaster recovery tools and operates in “lights out” mode requiring little IT supervision.
