Symantec Corp. has announced the availability of its Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers software in India. Developed for small- and medium-sized organizations, Backup Exec 11d expands the product line’s continuous data protection beyond Microsoft Windows file servers and workstations to include Microsoft Exchange, eliminating the need for daily Exchange and mailbox backups.
Backup Exec 11d features a Granular Recovery Technology that enables recovery of critical data from Microsoft applications like Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory and more in just seconds. It also provides enhanced data security with 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption capabilities, and extends platform support with Backup Exec media servers running on x64-bit Windows servers.
“Today’s Windows data protection is not just about backup, it is about recovery,” said Jeremy Burton, group president, Enterprise Security and Data Management, Symantec Corp. “Backup Exec 11d delivers continuous protection for mission-critical Microsoft applications like Exchange and SQL Server, and enables rapid data recovery. This significantly reduces the cost, time, and resources required of small- and medium-sized organizations. Whether customers are backing up to disk, tape, or both, Backup Exec 11d is the Gold Standard for Windows Data Recovery.”
Symantec Backup Exec 11d extends continuous protection capabilities beyond Windows file servers and workstations to Microsoft Exchange, addressing two key customer demands. First, it eliminates the need to perform daily Exchange backups, greatly simplifying administration and reducing costs for business and IT. Second, it helps deliver email continuity for businesses. Continuous protection for Exchange allows data to be recovered as recently as just a second before a loss.
The Granular Recovery Technology enables the recovery of individual emails, folders and mailboxes without the need for separate mailbox backups. This means IT administrators no longer have to run multiple backup jobs to protect Exchange, effectively cutting backup times in half, or better. Granular Recovery Technology works with either continuous or traditional Exchange data protection methods. Backup Exec 11d also enables the quick recovery of components of other Microsoft applications, including SharePoint Portal Server, Active Directory and SQL 2005.
Symantec said organizations are increasingly focusing on the security of the data they are backing up or moving off-site for long-term protection or disaster recovery purposes. Backup Exec 11d provides 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption to protect data when it is being backed up. Data can either be encrypted at the client-side to ensure protection when moving across a corporate network, or when copied from a disk-based backup to tape media.
Backup Exec 11d extends platform support to full protection of x64-bit Windows environments, adding x64-bit support for Backup Exec media servers to the previously supported x64-bit protected clients or servers. It also introduces NDMP support enabling the protection of NetApp Filers, as well as support for Oracle RMAN/RAC, IBM DB2, MAC OSX (PowerPC), HP-UX, Solaris 10 and SUSE 10.0 Clients.
American Portwell, a supplier of specialty computing platforms located in Fremont, Calif, with worldwide offices in Taiwan, Japan, China, the UK and India, is using Symantec Backup Exec 11d to streamline IT processes, centralize backup and recovery for its business critical information, and minimize costs.
“Backup Exec 11d provides us with centralized backup and recovery and has helped us reduce the time spent on Exchange restores by 96%,” said Mark Huang, IT manager, American Portwell. “Portwell is committed to high standards and engineering excellence and ensuring our business information is secure and available is critical to our success. Symantec protects our critical data, so we can focus on innovation and delivering our solutions to the market.”
