Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. has opened a second Internet Data Centre facility in Ottawa to fill demand for its managed services as it reaches full capacity at its other local site.

The new 18,000-square foot facility will feature a total of 15,000 square feet of raised floor when all three phases are rolled out. The first phase is roughly 8,000 square feet in total, with 5,000 square feet of raised floor, and will employ seven or eight new local staff.

The facility provides a place for companies to store servers and other infrastructures which require continuous connection to the Internet, and offers hosting, managed system administration and managed security, as well as continuous online backup, security and storage solutions for mission-critical applications and data.

The company is opening the Ottawa facility in conjunction with another Internet Data Centre opening in Toronto, with two more centres expected to open in early 2008.

“In our effort to strengthen Primus’s commitment to environmental sustainability, and manage spending for our customers as the cost and usage of power increases, our new data centres have been designed to reduce power consumption and the impact on the environment,” said Primus Canada’s senior vice-president of business services A.J. Byers.

The centres feature high-efficiency module unlimited power supply (UPS) systems, green transformers, economizers in the cooling system and built-in motion sensors in the lighting system, which are expected to reduce power consumption and wasted power by 50 per cent or more.
