Up until our June 1, 2009 picks, we have been publishing the top 25 online backup companies as just “Online Backup Methods” since we started ranking the top online backup companies in January 2005. This had resulted in a mix of offerings that did not reflect the market demands. Hence, we have now grouped the top 75 companies into 3 categories, namely: 1) Consumer - for the general consumers 2) Small Medium Business (SMB) - for small and medium businesses 3) Enterprise - for large enterprise corporations The top 75 Online Backup Companies are determined mainly based on these criteria outlined in this article: We also take into consideration news releases companies publish in the preceding month, server stability, reports from our mystery shoppers, our own reviews, user’s feedbacks, company corporate blogs, and more. 2Thanks for the roundup of reviews. A couple notes that are worthy of some consideration. Your review indicates Carbonite can back up external drives, but according to their faq, they do not back up external drives or network mapped drives which is a pretty serious limitation in this day of USB attached devices and NAS.
Also, Carbonite’s client doesn’t run on windows 2000. Not a big deal for most people but those of us who keep old systems around to act as servers, this is a bit of an issue. Wish they had a Linux client for the same reason.
Apart from these issues though, Carbonite is a brilliant solution.
Finally, for the paranoid among us, if you don’t want to store your data in the US where privacy laws have mostly disappeared, you might want to look at the small handful of companies that have their servers in other countries.
