P2P Online Backup Service Provider Zoogmo Closes its Doors

Peer-to-Peer Online backup service provider, Zoogmo (http://zoogmo.com) announces that it is closing its doors on December 31, 2009.

The company has posted the following message in its website:

Zoogmo Management thanks all of our users for your loyal support since we launched our backup service in August 2006. We have enjoyed serving you but the time has come for us to close our doors. We plan to shut down our servers on 31st December 2009 at which point your backed-up data will no longer be available.

Zoogmo described its services as:

“At Zoogmo our mission is to create solutions that help encourage people to proactively backup their precious data BEFORE disaster strikes. Zoogmo makes backup cool by using existing internet connections, available space on computers and your great relationships with your friends to automatically and securely back up your files for FREE to a place you trust.”

Zoogmo was based on the principle that users would backup their data by building their personal network of trusted friends computers or USB drives. However, it sounded that users did not feel comfortable with such services, backing up their important files on friends’ computers. Zoogmo created some buzz when it launched, however, it lost traction there after for some reason.

So, why did Zoogmo went down? Was it a marketing problem? Was it in the technology? Was it in the leadership?
