aCelera Sync accelerates backup and recovery while reducing network bandwidth utilization by more than 90 percent

BURLINGTON, Mass., Apr 12, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Certeon, the leading provider of virtualized WAN optimization and application acceleration, today announces that Boots & Coots, a leading pressure control vendor in the oil and gas industry, has selected Certeon’s aCelera Sync virtual appliance to optimize backup and recovery operations between its data center and remote replication site. Using aCelera Sync software, Boots & Coots realized a more than 90 percent reduction in backup and replication times as well as network bandwidth utilization. Boots & Coots also gained a 50 percent savings in up-front costs by purchasing aCelera Sync as opposed to using a hardware-based WAN optimization solution.

Boots & Coots provides a suite of integrated pressure control services to onshore and offshore oil and gas exploration and development companies worldwide. Their internal disaster recovery environment between their Houston, Texas, data center and Austin, Texas, replication site was continuously moving incremental data backups over a 20 Mbps network with 10 ms of latency. Boots & Coots had deployed a leading hardware-based WAN optimization solution but did not see any significant reduction in the backup and replication response time or network bandwidth utilization. After evaluating Certeon’s aCelera Sync virtual appliance software, Boots & Coots was able to run its backup and recovery operations 3x faster than with their existing WAN optimization solution. In addition, Boots & Coots reduced its network bandwidth utilization from 69GB to 7.2GB, a more than 90 percent bandwidth savings representing a $700 per month ROI.

“Backup and recovery is critical to running our oil and gas pressure control and prevention business, requiring us to continuously back up data in a constant stream. Our current network environment was not transmitting the data between our Houston data center and Austin recovery site fast enough, and we were requiring increasing amounts of network bandwidth to get the job done,” states Dwayne McCoy, IT manager, Boots & Coots. “Certeon’s expert team came to us with its aCelera Sync virtual appliance software and presented us with a far superior solution for our backup and recovery infrastructure because of its high performance, low cost, ease of deployment and excellent support.”

According to McCoy, “aCelera proved to be leaps and bounds ahead of the optimization products we were using, which were incapable of delivering the performance we saw with aCelera. aCelera was easy and fast to install and provision at both the data center and the remote recovery site. In addition, everyone that I had the pleasure to work with from Certeon did an outstanding job. Moving forward, Certeon will be our only backup and recovery optimization vendor.”

Dwayne McCoy from Boots & Coots will be speaking along with Certeon on backup and recovery within virtualized environments at the upcoming Virtualization and Cloud Conference and Expo, Tuesday, April 20, 2010, Javits Conference Center, New York City. Certeon will also be exhibiting at the Virtualization and Cloud Computing Expo, Booth #343.

Business continuity processes such as data backup and replication can be significantly slowed over a WAN. Low bandwidth, high latency, contention, and packet loss can result in longer backup windows and the need to buy more and more bandwidth to support growing amounts of backup data. aCelera Sync is specifically designed to remove these network issues and enable enterprises to quickly and efficiently achieve RTO and RPO goals.

Certeon was the first vendor to introduce a truly virtualized WAN optimization and application acceleration solution, aCelera Virtual Appliance software, for reducing remote application response time, increasing scalability and lowering IT costs. With the addition of aCelera Sync software, Certeon delivers the industry’s first virtual appliance that dramatically reduces data backup and recovery time and lowers network bandwidth requirements for the business continuity market. aCelera Sync enables IT managers to consolidate the management of their remote business continuity environments and eliminate the costs and risks of off-site tape transport and storage. aCelera Sync reduces the amount of traffic going over the WAN, delaying additional bandwidth upgrades and associated costs. aCelera Sync is nondisruptive and allows backup and replication as often as needed. Certeon’s aCelera Sync speeds remote backup for many of the industry’s leading backup and replication solutions, including, but not limited to, products from EMC, CommVault, Double-Take, Dell EqualLogic, FalconStor, Network Appliance, and Symantec.

“Mission-critical business continuity processes can be significantly slowed over a WAN, putting the enterprise at risk,” states Peter Dougherty, president and CEO, Certeon. “aCelera Sync enables enterprises such as Boots & Coots to quickly and efficiently accelerate backup and replication operations and eliminate costly network bandwidth purchases.”

About Certeon
Certeon is the leader in virtualized WAN optimization. Certeon’s aCelera software is the first WAN optimization and application acceleration virtual appliance to deliver acceleration, scalability and manageability. aCelera software reduces application response time over the WAN and lowers network bandwidth requirements by more than 95 percent without proprietary hardware appliances. The aCelera family of software-based solutions includes aCelera virtual vppliance and aCelera Client for optimized desktop to data center performance and aCelera Sync for efficient business continuity over the WAN. aCelera performance scales linearly as more resources are added (i.e., CPU, memory, and disk) and supports up to 50 percent more concurrent accelerated connections than “closed” proprietary hardware appliances. Enterprises and managed service providers can save as much as 60 percent in total cost of ownership when deploying aCelera software to virtualized data centers, cloud environments or remote offices.
