Poulin Grain is a fourth generation, Vermont family owned and operated company, specializing in high quality dairy, equine, pet and livestock feeds with facilities in Vermont and New York. Newport, Vermont is home to the company’s central datacenter, where routine backups are made and stored. For many years, the IT staff was backing up all critical data to a legacy tape system. Wanting to move to a disk-based solution, the company replaced tape with a disk backup solution, but found that product fell fall short of expectations – in fact, backup windows actually grew to an unmanageable 18 hours.
IT manager, Paul Martin, was spending hours each week troubleshooting and administrating the company’s disk backup system and determined the system was making it difficult to meet backup, retention and restore goals. In one instance, Poulin Grain lost a year’s worth of backup data using the disk-based system.
After extensive research, Poulin Grain decided to replace its incumbent disk solution with ExaGrid’s disk backup with deduplication to better manage its backups and restores. The ExaGrid system works with the company’s existing backup applications, Symantec Backup Exec and Vizioncore vRanger Pro. Since installation of the ExaGrid solution, the company reduced its backup window to just three hours and is seeing data deduplication rates at over 23:1, meeting all of Poulin’s critical data needs. In addition, retention issues have been completely solved since installation of the ExaGrid, and restores have been exceptionally fast, meeting the data demands of the company and its employees.
“ExaGrid’s technology helps companies like Poulin Grain better manage data backups and restores and effectively handle future needs through our scalable, cost-effective disk-based backup solution,†said Bill Hobbib, vice president of marketing, ExaGrid.â€We’re pleased to see Poulin Grain recognized for their innovative approach to data backup, as they exemplify how ExaGrid is enabling midmarket and small enterprise customers to cost-effectively achieve faster, more reliable data backups and high scalability without forklift upgrades as data volumes grow.â€
