Mozy Online Data Backup Firm Now Operating Under VMWare – Transferred from EMC, the Parent Company

EMC owned, Seattle-based Mozy, an online data backup and storage service provider, has been “acquired” by VMware, a provider of virtualization software. Well, this is not an acquisition. Is this confusing? Well, read more.

VMware and Mozy are both owned by the tech giant EMC. After months of planning, EMC has decided to structure Mozy under the VMWare umbrella. This means, all Mozy staff and assets will now be under VMWare. This is not an acquisition, rather a strategic move to align EMC’s organizations and strengthen VMware’s cloud offerings.

In a blog post, the CTO of VMWare Steve Herrod, said:

“We believe that, by being directly engaged with the delivery of such a service, VMware will further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities into the products that we provide to our customers and public cloud partners”. Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering. We believe that, by being directly engaged with the delivery of such a service, VMware will further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities into the products that we provide to our customers and public cloud partners.

Palo Alto-based VMWare said it will operate the Mozy service on behalf of EMC without interruption to Mozy customers. With this arrangement, VMware looks to access Mozy’s globally distributed, large-scale cloud services and expand its portfolio.

Mozy COO Charlotte Yarkoni has posted a blog regarding this transfer:

Today is virtual moving day here at Mozy. While our offices and focus remain the same, Mozy employees are transferring as an intact team to VMware from our mutual parent company, EMC. VMware and the Mozy team will continue the full portfolio of Mozy services. In addition, staff from both companies will begin to integrate longer-term development plans central to building and delivering hybrid cloud solutions. EMC retains the Mozy business as it has been delivering it for over four years now. An operational support agreement between EMC and VMware is in place to make this possible and ensure no impact to Mozy customers. We have developed a strong partnership with VMware and over these past several months it has become increasingly clear that moving to VMware will allow us to take advantage of and extend the synergies we have been building between the companies. VMware and Mozy share a vision for how cloud computing will transform IT and help businesses achieve greater agility. By joining forces, we believe we can accelerate the development of offerings that businesses are looking for.

Mozy customers will experience our service just the same– our service offerings, data centers, and customer support are completely unchanged. Mozy customers can count on us continuing to improve and invest in our existing services. In the future they can also expect greater interoperability between Mozy and VMware environments, and complementary end user and server-related services.

So we are excited about this virtual move, and are confident it will be a very positive one for Mozy customers and the Mozy team.

We contacted Mozy and asked for their comments regarding this transfer. Mozy has confirmed in an email that “the transfer is indeed genuine” of employees and assets, with no strings attached. Mozy’s PR Manager Steve Jensen has confirmed EMC’s position on the subject:

“EMC and VMware remain at the forefront of enabling the shift to cloud computing. Mozy’s unparalleled expertise in building and delivering globally distributed, high-scale cloud offerings will be essential to VMware’s ability to help enterprises and service providers execute on a long-term hybrid cloud strategy. EMC will continue to invest in and enhance the Mozy service offered directly and through the Mozy service provider ecosystem.”

In the past, EMC struggled with the corporate structure of Mozy. A couple of years ago, Mozy was under a new company called Decho and later the Decho brand was dropped. Now, EMC figures that Mozy is best positioned under VMWare. Well, this move actually makes sense, but the success of this transfer is remained to be seen.
