HP B6200 StoreOnce Backup System—Deduplicating at Magical Speeds!
If data de-duplication is currently slowing down your backups, here is a new way to do it–eliminating delays!
HP is now bringing to market its HP B6200 StoreOnce Backup System. The technology in use in these devices is claimed to be an industry first. It incorporates scale-out architecture into de-duplication solutions and autonomically restarts in the event of backup hardware failure. The device processes and stores up to 28 Terabytes (TB) of data per hour–trebling the existing industry processing speeds.
Enterprises that are inundated with large volumes of information can now hope for some alleviation of their misery. Data storage requirements can be drastically reduced as HP’s new appliance (designed by HP Labs—HP’s research wing) gets to work and de-duplicates / removes multiple versions of the same data from the backup.
HP has gone ahead and confidently embedded the StoreOnce deduplication technology into their HP Data Protector Software. HP clients can now enjoy high-performing backups with optimized storage utilization. HP uses the same StoreOnce algorithm across its hardware and software products delivering customers “Federated Deduplication”. Even remote users can now backup data to core centers without cluttering up space with duplicates of information. Data Protector, powered by StoreOnce consumes 90% less RAM than competing software solutions and delivers applications at unprecedented speeds (1.8 TB per hour) to the end user and can support up to 1,000 users at a time.
At a pre-launch conference call with BackupReview.info, Craig Nunes, Director of Marketing, HP Storage, said, “The system does not compromise on scalability. In fact, it provides scalability of up to 768 TB of data without downtime and de-duplication ratios of up to 20:1 or more. In fact, we have customers who have achieved a de-duplication ratio of 35:1. Users can effectively store up to 10 petabytes of information”.
The clustered dual node active-active architecture of the appliance uses HP Predictive Acceleration Technology to reduce backup time and perform intelligent data analysis. It uses HP Rapid Restore technology to accelerate data recovery. HP Automatic Restart facility redirects backups to alternative hardware automatically to reduce risk of data loss. HP Adaptive Micro-Chunking contains costs and resource outlays for backup. Finally, IT administration costs are reduced by centralization of data backups.
Other interesting services that come packaged with the HP B6200 StoreOnce Backup System are HP Data Profiling and Tiering, HP Data Archiving and HP Converged Infrastructure with “Instant-On Enterprise” features.
HP has also announced the HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System which is ideal for mid-size companies with Windows centric environments. There is no call to manually integrate the systems with Windows or expend administrative time in making it compatible to existing anti-virus software.
The 48TB HP B6200 StoreOnce Backup System is available worldwide at a list price of $250,000 USD for the usable entry system and the HP X5000 G2 Network Storage System is being shipped at a list price of $30,229 USD. Remote sites can advantage themselves on the replication licensing that is being made available free of charge. The prices might look very expensive, but this is not a solution for the average consumer or an SMB; rather for a big corporation enterprise.
