KineticD Online Data Backup Expert Tips: The Importance of Data Deduplication for Businesses

There is no doubt about it; whether through the use of smartphones or supercomputers, people everywhere are constantly creating and saving more digital information every day, and the trend clearly shows no sign of stopping. And, of course, when compared to the average citizen’s data storage issues, enterprises both large and small alike are unfortunately more prone to being heavily burdened with everything that they need to do in order to keep up with their growing data storage and security needs. So, the question is, how does an enterprise effectively go about dealing with their rapidly expanding data storage requirements?

Well, when it comes to dealing with this problem, the simple act of acquiring more space with which to store the information in question can often seem the easiest solution. In addition to this, another well known option is the practice of manually archiving or deleting redundant or otherwise unnecessary files. However, one procedure for trimming down data storage amounts that may not be as obvious as these first two methods is that of data compression. Indeed, the practice of changing the amount of space needed to store the information in the first place by making it effectively smaller through compression is now becoming an increasingly relied upon practice by businesses everywhere.

Of course, some may point to the falling prices of hard drives and other storage devices as negating the need for data compression. However, the fact of the matter is that storage costs have barely lessened enough to keep up with the rate at which the average amount of data stored by companies is growing, so while helping the situation, falling disk prices are far from a solution to the problem. For this reason and others, data compression has garnered a lot of attention amongst businesses and IT specialists alike. Indeed, the advantages of compressing data are twofold; not only do enterprises that utilize this service end up saving money on data storage costs, but they also end up with files that transmit quicker and easier over networks (and the Internet) as well.

One important type of compression is called “data deduplication“, and, quite simply, involves the removal of redundant data. However, deduplication is not to be confused with simply deleting unnecessary files; the deduplication process seeks to eliminate unnecessary data from within the saved files themselves by replacing sections of files that exist in other previously saved versions with “pointers” that lead to the original data so that all of the files can be put back together and accessed when the need arises. This type of data compression is especially helpful when it comes to online data backup where compression of versioned files in the backup cache can often yield quite impressive data conservation results, with some online backup providers (and their customers) receiving up to 95% more disk space as a result!

Deduplication methods differ between primary and secondary data storage devices, with methods that still allow for higher levels of system performance usually being used for primary storage devices like computers and active databases. Of course, it was only a few years ago when data deduplication was only associated with auxiliary storage and not primary data storage devices like home or business computers and active databases. However, with more and more people taking advantage of and interacting with cloud storage as their primary data source, there has been much more attention directed toward data compression practices and how they can help both businesses and cloud service providers alike save money by cutting down on storage costs and speeding up data transfer times as well.

We here at KineticD specialize in data deduplication, and leverage this advantage by embedding it into our user client software, which deduplicates the data at the user end before it is sent off to the cloud for online data backup, cutting our costs and yours by lessening storage sizes and saving time with faster file transfer rates for all data backups and restores. In addition to this, automatic deduplication is also integrated into the local data storage equipment of our hybrid backup solutions. But, don’t just take our word for it, sign up for our free 14-day trial and see for yourself just how streamlined backing up online has become through the use of data deduplication and other advanced data compression methods.
