Yet Users Continue to Share Photos on Social Networks and Back Up Only Half as Often
PORT CHESTER, NY, Jun 04, 2012 — /BackupReview.info/ — Consumers feel social networks are not concerned about privacy surrounding photo sharing according to a recent survey from MiMedia, a provider of a cloud-based personal media platform. At the same time, consumers admit they themselves are not taking all possible steps to effectively preserve their personal digital information.
MiMedia’s first annual Consumer Cloudification survey, which queries respondents on a range of behavior around file and personal media sharing, found that if their privacy was violated, 80 percent of consumers would cease sharing on a social site altogether. 71 percent of respondents reported they are concerned about the security and privacy of their personal information on Facebook, yet 58 percent of those concerned admitted they continue to share photos on Facebook at least once a month.
Additionally, 74 percent of respondents feel social networks are not concerned about the privacy of users’ photos. More than half of those respondents (51 percent) also admitted they have shared photos on social networks in the last year.
Survey results also show social sharing of photos far exceeded the rate of backing them up, suggesting that consumers are careless when it comes to their personal multimedia. Among those who use social networks to share photos, 54 percent do so at least weekly, while only 21 percent back up their photos on a regular basis. Surprisingly, 43 percent of social sharers reported they don’t even think about backing up their media.
“Consumers clearly value the ability to access and share their digital life with friends and family, and many place a higher value on these functions than backup and security,” said Erik Zamkoff, CEO of MiMedia. “This is why we created MiMedia, to help consumers easily access and quickly share their media from anywhere without having to sacrifice the security of their files or their privacy.”
Results also suggest that consumers do not recognize that the social networks, email clients, and other technology they use to share and store their multimedia are actually cloud based. In fact, 81 percent admitted they had never heard of the term “cloud computing” or were not very familiar with it. Additionally, 60 percent of total respondents answered they did not use any consumer cloud services, while unwittingly admitting to using at least one cloud service. Specifically, the survey found nearly 87 percent use web-based email applications, 67 percent use Facebook, and 66 percent use online banking applications.
“The cloud is quickly making its way into the consumer lexicon, and companies like MiMedia are helping make the cloud a seamless part of daily life as users share and access their media on the go,” added Zamkoff.
Methodology MiMedia survey was conducted in March 2012. For the survey, a national sample of 315 adults aged 18 and older were interviewed online via Zoomerang, provider of a self-service alternative for conducting online surveys.
