KineticD Online Data Backup Expert Tips: Three Key Steps to Ensuring that Your Enterprise is “Cloud-Ready”

With all of the advancements that have taken place within the realm of online data backup and cloud computing, connecting to and integrating with cloud services has never been easier. However, it is important for businesses aspiring toward the “cloudscaping” of their IT concerns to realize that cloud services are not instantly implementable, with there being three basic, interconnected steps that all enterprises must take before they can truly be considered “cloud-ready” in the first place.

1. Identifying your enterprise’s assets
The process of taking stock of all of your business’s assets, whether physical or virtual, is a very important first step toward understanding exactly what your cloud requirements will be. Assets that must be taken into account include the varying types and classifications of all of your organization’s data, the cataloguing of all existing hardware that your enterprise has at its disposal, the various types of software that your employees use (and how frequently it is used), the network components that are currently in use by your existing in-house IT infrastructure, and any other aspect of your business’s IT that could pertain to the upcoming integration with the cloud. This all-important process of taking stock in your company’s assets will help you discover any potential weaknesses in your current IT system, which can often prove invaluable upon initializing the cloud integration process. Moreover, by taking stock of your company’s hardware and software applications, you will be able to better determine which ones you will want to migrate to the cloud, and which should remain strictly in-house.

2. Analyzing your risks
As stated before, once you’ve performed a thorough analysis of your company’s assets and overall IT infrastructure, you will be in a much better position to identify any and all potential in-house IT risks and data security gaps, and therefore avoid inadvertently transferring them to the cloud. However, it is important to realize that this second step will actually be an ongoing one that should be continued throughout the entire cloud integration process. After all, the risk analysis of the cloud services themselves that you will be integrating with will also be vital to ensuring that you avoid security risks or any other potential vulnerabilities to all of your company’s important digital assets. And, the potential risks are many; including a lack of adequate security in regards to user data access permissions, insufficient network controls, unnecessary and potentially security-breaching residual data, and insufficiently optimized user-monitoring capabilities.

3. Conducting post-run evaluations
Finally, once your business’s IT is fully integrated with the services of an online cloud vendor, post-run evaluations should be performed in order to ensure that the cloud integration process has been implemented with the highest level of data security and efficiency possible. This evaluation process would include analyzing how the new cloud services are impacting your company’s network bandwidth limitations (in regards to both its connection to the internet and across the enterprise itself), and the performance of your company’s hardware, software and other various network-connected assets. In addition to this, as stated before, the process of analyzing risks will have to be ongoing as well, with the discovery of any new potential vulnerabilities and security weaknesses that may exist within the recently acquired cloud services being a very important component of the post-run evaluation period. Once this evaluation is complete, it will be necessary to work in tandem with the cloud vendor to implement any necessary countermeasures in order to mitigate all security concerns or other vulnerabilities that have been brought to light.
