New York, NY – August 27, 2012 — / — BUMI (Backup My Info!), the premium provider of online backup and recovery solutions for small to mid-sized businesses, today issued a five-point checklist to help organizations increase their disaster recovery preparedness for this year’s hurricane season.

With six named storms to date this season and Hurricane Isaac churning across the Caribbean and heading towards the US, the need for businesses to have a reliable disaster recovery solution in place is increasingly important. In fact, more than 50 percent of participants in BUMI’s 2012 Data Backup Industry Survey named business continuity and disaster recovery as the most important consideration in backing up their data. However, the majority of these respondents failed to test their recovery procedures on a regular basis, indicating a serious lag in their ability to successfully keep their data intact during a weather-related disaster.

Last year’s Hurricane Irene, which hit New York City and had a significant impact on local businesses, left an estimated $7 billion to $13 billion of damage in its wake. In order to help businesses avoid critical data loss and costly downtime this year during a hurricane or other weather-related disaster, BUMI offers the following 5-point checklist:

  1. Embrace Geographic Diversity
In the event of a large-scale natural event like a hurricane, your data should be backed up in a geographically distant location to avoid both your office and the data center holding your data being knocked out at the same time.
  2. Avoid Windows
Put your servers in a windowless room to minimize the possibility of rain damage.
  3. Be Mindful of Elevation
If you’re in a hurricane-prone area, avoid putting your servers in the basement or bottom floor, since that is where water collects during flooding.
  4. Secure Your Backup Plans
Create a formal disaster recovery plan in case servers are damaged or destroyed, and put that plan in a secure location such as lockbox service online.
  5. Have a Local Backup
This will be crucial if you lose Internet connectivity but maintain power.

“Once disaster strikes, it’s too late to try and put recovery plan in place,” says Jennifer Walzer, President and CEO of BUMI. “That’s why we advise our clients to think through all of the options and worst-case scenarios ahead of time. With the right plan in place, a business could be up and running with minimal disruption after a disaster.”

In a continuing effort to offer its clients the highest level of data protection, the BUMI solution includes a number of features to help minimize downtime, including time-based archiving rules, local storage options, and BCR (BUMI Cloud Recovery), a virtual disaster recovery solution that enables businesses to recover their servers into BUMI’s cloud in the event of a disaster.
