Vembu Online Data Backup Expert Tips: Vembu’s Near Perfect Backup Solution
If you are looking for a single window, cross platform, high performance backup system, you would do well to consider Vembu technologies’ offering—StoreGrid. Backup and restore for Disk images, cPanelservers, Exchange servers, SharePoint servers or HyperV, VMware or Xen virtual machines are part of the packaged offering sans plugins and add-ons. StoreGrid can backup files and folders from mapped external drives. The Bare Metal Restore capabilities of the software facilitate Point-in-Time restores.
StoreGrid backups are configurable. The backup configuration panel is designed to take user inputs on preferred backup settings and the details of the files and folders that form a part of the backup set. If the backup set is large and network bandwidth has limitations, the application kick starts a backup seeding process which could be completed over an estimated length of time. Users can choose to seed the backup to a local machine or a removable disk and request for onsite backup from disk to server.
StoreGrid’s backup is incremental. An efficient tracking mechanism operates in the background to identify files and folders that have changed since the last backup. Only new files and folders and the changes to seeded files and folders are backed up on schedule reducing amount of disk space consumed and bandwidth used up. All files transmitted to the backup are encrypted with Blowfish 192 DES encryption algorithm and compressed before backup. The backed up files are repeatedly and automatically checked for integrity by the application.
While there is no limit to the size of file that can be backed up, users can choose to set a size limit for incremental backups. If incremental changes to a folder are large, users can launch a Synthetic Full Backup (based on a user size limit input) and incremental backups can be invoked to build on the synthetic full backup thereafter. Open files do not halt the backup. StoreGrid rides on Windows Volume Shadow copy service to create file snapshots and evaluate file consistency while continuing to back up the open file. Interrupted backups are automatically resumed when the computer powers on or Internet connectivity is re-established.
Backup schedules can be hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or continuous. Separate retention schedules can be drawn up for files and folders in the backup or marked for deletion.
Of course, any backup system, including Vembu’s StoreGrid, has limitations. But, these are not very significant and the promise of a near perfect backup makes StoreGrid software of choice for the user.
