SaveNet Online Data Backup Expert Tips: Moving to the Cloud Makes Sound Financial Sense
Moving to the cloud makes sound financial sense. The “Pay as You Go” model is attractive to businesses that have budgetary constraints and cannot tie up huge amounts of capital in IT infrastructure. Even large enterprises which can afford the CapEx (Capital Expenditure) may find it extremely convenient to ride on third party infrastructure to save themselves the costs of training and maintaining expensive IT infrastructure / personnel for what is often delegated as “Support Services” or “Secondary” business activities.
Most businesses take their processes and their data for granted. Moving to the Cloud gives pause and forces the business into a process/data review mode. A process rethink results in streamlining of processes and identification of process redundancies that were increasing costs to manufacture without contributing anything to the quality or quantity of production. The realignment of processes results in unexpected cost savings. As a first step, the categorization of data underscores the mission criticality of some kinds of data and enables the organization to prioritize their storage options based on levels of criticality of information.
Disaster recovery planning is no longer a luxury. The digital world is extremely vulnerable and businesses cannot afford to lose their information under any natural or man-made circumstances. So, disaster recovery planning is automatic and integral to many cloud services.
The vendors themselves are hypersensitive about the security of customer information and make immense efforts to ensure safety and security of the data entrusted to them. Many vendors maintain physically secured data centres in geographically dispersed locations to replicate/mirror the information available in their primary data centres. They urge customers to maintain local copies of their mission-critical information and even facilitate the creation of local copies by provisioning functionalities for local backup in their online backup and recovery software. A few vendors put extra marketing efforts to promote local backup devices that can replicate the information that is being backed up to the remote online cloud server.
Cloud computing software promotes legal compliance. CIOs do not have to make a special effort to store information in multiple formats to meet the information demands from different legal bodies. Data can be conveniently culled out from a unified central data repository and presented in a variety of formats using reporting interfaces that are constructed specifically to meet the different legal requirements of the enterprise. The cloud vendor’s software automatically enforces authentication and authorization protocols and maintains access logs.
Versions of documents can also be maintained for verification and recovery with date and time stamps. Data transmissions are encrypted using bank grade or military grade encryption algorithms to prevent listeners and hackers from hijacking enterprise information.
Finally, Cloud computing resources are infinitely scalable. Quantities of a resource can be requisitioned and will be made available on demand. There is no need to spend hours on capacity planning exercises with endless hypothetical discussions on when and how the capital outlays can be recovered by the organization or there is no call to make financial outlays for acquisition of hardware/software and lay down cables for connecting the different parts of the organization. The cost to plan/ buy and deploy can be avoided as cloud vendors ensure elasticity of resources and are happy and even eager to provide the business with more resources even as the need arises.
