SaveNet Online Data Backup Expert Tips: Moving-On Up – Online Backup and Recovery in the Cloud is an Improvement Project
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go”. – T. S. Eliot
Migrating to the cloud appears to make redundant, the entire IT infrastructure that enterprises (big and small) collected, integrated and made operational over the years! The process can be highly unsettling and even frightening. But, only those who risk going all the way will discover new technologies and greater capabilities. Undoubtedly, backup and recovery in the cloud is a step forward for enterprises. The process transforms the very way people work and creates synergies where none existed before.
Scattered, discrete branches of an organization can integrate with the parent business via a WAN that is simple to set up and cost effective in the bargain! Users can just sign up for an account on a remote server maintained by a cloud backup and recovery vendor and provide appropriate access to its branches. Data can be uploaded from the head office and the branches to the single data repository and authorized personal can access such information from anywhere, anytime. This in turn expands the market reach and enables even mobile workers access critical information “on the go”. Customers can be facilitated with status information as and when required, using simple web browser based interfaces that are platform independent. Employees can collaborate over documents and save the different versions of the document automatically with pre-defined versioning systems.
Database management is streamlined. Open source programs are used to develop platform independent administrative interfaces that can be used by administrators operating on diverse platforms. A single central management console is integrated with the backup and recovery agent that is installed on the client machine. The administrator can configure the agent and specify the clients that are permitted to connect to the remote account and the user name and password of employees, who are authorized to backup, recover or access the information that is stored in the remote server. Data is automatically encrypted and stored in an encrypted format on the server, ensuring that listeners and hackers are prevented from harvesting information even if they hack into the network.
Existing hardware and software resources can be diverted to other mission-critical activities, while backup, recovery and availability of information is relegated to the cloud. Cloud backup and recovery vendors take customer data offsite effortlessly and create the necessary hot-sites and disaster recovery sites for their own and customer’s benefit. Data is always available, so long as the enterprise has Internet connectivity and sufficient bandwidth for upload or download of information. A few cloud vendors also encourage their customers to create local backup copies of the data using vendor supplied devices, even as data is being streamed over the Internet to the remote server. This makes for high availability of information and instant recovery in the event of any kind of man-made or natural disaster.
Those who venture into the cloud will realize that they are not really stepping into the unknown. A lot of thought and pioneering efforts have gone into the creation of the cloud and its functionalities. Small and medium businesses will be moving up rather than moving out the business niche in which they have established themselves. They will suddenly find that they have acquired the capability of competing with the larger businesses on an equal footing and are able to position themselves on par with them in the market place. They can enjoy all those tools that were earlier only available to larger businesses in the niche market.
