Vembu Online Data Backup Expert Tips: The Need for Replication of Backups

Replication is the act of copying and then moving data between different site. Data replication keeps a second synchronized copy of your files on a separate system, ensuring continuous availability and security of the data. While traditional data backup requires manual (or scheduled) backing-up after files are edited, replication automates the process of moving changes you make to your original copy of your “Backup” copy.

Some of the common ways in which replication can be done are “Synchronous and Asynchronous replication”.

Synchronous Replication – is where every write from the application is sent to the local disk system, which sends it to the remote storage system. The write is not acknowledged back to the application until the remote system has received the write and acknowledged that the write is complete, which guarantees no data loss.

Asynchronous Replication – creates an exact copy of the local data on a remote system, asynchronous replication acknowledges write back to the application immediately and then transmits the data to the remote site. Since the application is not waiting for the remote system to respond, there may be a chance of data loss and with no order consistency.

Asynchronous replication is faster but It is impossible to accurately recreate data at the remote end because there is no way of knowing what was successfully transmitted but Synchronous replication does guarantee with no data loss which has been traditionally implemented by larger enterprises.

Using Cloud for Replication
Replication requires dedicated servers among other basic resources, which could be quite resource intensive for small organizations. Using cloud for replication eliminates this drawback by using an online web services like Amazon. It’s core success being its simplicity: no matter how many objects you want to store, how small or big those objects are, or what object access patterns you have to deal with, you can rely on cloud replication to take away the headaches of dealing with the hard issues typically associated with big storage systems. All the complexities of scalability, reliability, durability, performance and cost-effectiveness are hidden behind a very simple programming interface.

Host-based Replication
Host-based replication is generally the best fit for disaster recovery through the cloud, because storage array-based and network-based replications require devices at the source and target locations. Host-based replication lets you move data from standard servers in your environment to the provider’s servers off-site.

Vembu StoreGrid is an online backup and disaster recovery software which offers the most cost-effective backup & disaster recovery solution for Managed Service providers to offer backup services to small and medium sized businesses that can recover complete system & application from a block-level to an individual file locally and across the WAN in minutes using StoreGrid replication.

Vembu StoreGrid also can be used for replicating to cloud through Cloud AMI which is a virtual appliance. Cloud AMI can be instantiated as a replication server and which can run on Amazon Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) platform. The StoreGrid Cloud AMI uses Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) to store the backup data from StoreGrid Clients. StoreGrid plans to integrate with Amazon Glacier for data archival very soon.

Replication Advantages:

  • Disaster Recovery

For permanent disaster recovery and for compliance with a variety of industry regulations, it is important to keep (offsite) backups. Keeping your organization’s data stored safely is a critical part of any disaster recovery strategy, and using remote replication to move data to an offsite location can offer a level of protection against data loss.

  • Improved Performance and Availability

Replication ensures improved performance and availability of the resource since it is available in multiple sites even if the backup server is busy, replication server can be used to access the resource.

  • Business Continuity

Replication and recovery focus on business continuity which offers quick and easy resumption of operations after a disaster or corruption. The focus is on minimizing the recovery time objective (RTO) which is the key to any business.

Replication is focused on ensuring that business applications and processes are always available, even after a disaster. Even though, it may be expensive to set up and maintain a dedicated replication server, for permanent disaster recovery and for compliance with a variety of industry regulations it’s important to keep (offsite) data. Vembu StoreGrid provides an easy and convenient way to achieve business continuity and faster disaster recovery. StoreGrid cloud backup software ensures that your data is never lost in the event of a disaster with “Replication of Backups”.
