HIPAA and HITECH Platform Supports Compliant Cloud Adoption in Healthcare

LOS ALTOS, CA – Apr 25, 2013 — / — Box today unveiled a new ecosystem of partners and compliancy updates to continue its momentum serving healthcare customers. The company announced 10 new partner applications built on the Box platform to address industry-specific information challenges, along with an investment in drchrono. Box also announced that it supports HIPAA/HITECH compliance and is signing Business Associate Agreements with customers.

“Hospitals, medical groups and physicians are all facing challenges, including privacy regulations, the migration to electronic health records, and outdated IT infrastructure,” said Whitney Bouck, general manager of enterprise at Box. “Box breaks down walls and helps people collaborate to get work done. These new partner apps and security standards will help where it matters most: managing critical information, coordinating care, and driving productivity industry-wide.”

In the past year, Box’s sales in the healthcare industry grew more than 81 percent, with leading organizations such as Henry Ford Health System, Beaumont Health System, HealthTrust Europe, Johns Hopkins HealthCare Solutions, Wake Forest Baptist Health, San Juan Regional Medical Center and Garden City Hospital, joining hundreds more healthcare customers that use Box to share, manage and collaborate on content in the cloud.

“We needed a tool that would allow us to centralize all our content and provide our doctors and executives quick, secure access to information on any device,” said Albert Fadool, CIO at Garden City Hospital. “Box gives us this ability — improving visibility and collaboration around critical content like patient health records, clinical images and hospital protocols.”

Box Healthcare App Partners
Box’s 10 new healthcare platform partners fall into four categories of healthcare services and are focused on addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the industry, including:

  • Clinical documentation: drchrono and Umbie DentalCare
  • Care coordination: TigerText, Doximity, Medigram, and PostureScreen Mobile
  • Interoperability: iMedViewer, iPaxera and Medi-Copy
  • Access to care: HealthTap

To further the company’s commitment to build an open ecosystem of partner apps in healthcare, Box has made an investment in drchrono through the Box Innovation Network® (/bin). drchrono is a cloud and web-based EHR application that is accessible from iPad and iPhone.

Box is also offering an exclusive promotion in partnership with Doximity, bringing 50GB of free cloud file sharing to Doximity’s online professional network of U.S. physicians. To claim the Box-Doximity 50GB promotion, users can simply sign up for Box through their Doximity accounts. The offer is available for the remainder of the year, ending December 31, 2013.

HIPAA/HITECH Compliance Support
Box is one of few cloud application providers that facilitates the health sector’s compliance with HIPAA and HITECH following the Department of Health and Human Services’ publication of the Omnibus Final Rule in January 2013, making it a trusted platform for protected health information (PHI), personal health record files (PHRs), and able to securely serve clinical researchers, healthcare systems and health insurance providers. Unlike most cloud providers, Box is willing to sign Business Associate Agreements (BAAs).

With Box’s platform, customers subject to HIPAA can:

  • Provide a secure cloud-based folder where a patient’s medical record or clinical summary can be saved and shared at their direction
  • Facilitate secure sharing and collaboration of clinical documents, images and medical records within or between differing EHR systems
  • Allow doctors to push medical records or clinical summaries in a secure manner to their patients
  • Collaborate around a patient’s diagnosis and exchange medical research

According to survey findings from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, providers and patients reported that 50 percent have problems with care coordination and communication among their doctors. Box is addressing these issues by enabling secure, anywhere access to health information (more than 50 percent of Box healthcare customers who use mobile devices, access documents on the iPad), eliminating paper workflows, and optimizing IT investment.

“The consumerization of IT backed by the evolution of the cloud is shaking up the healthcare market,” said Charlotte Davies, lead analyst, healthcare life sciences at Ovum. “The traditional approach to IT deployment in health systems — roll out, fix, integrate, update, fix — is changing. More and more healthcare enterprises are actively embracing the new capabilities enabled by cloud technologies to accommodate and utilize the fast growth of mobile applications and wirelessly connected devices.”

The platform apps for healthcare are accessible via the Box Apps Marketplace. For more information on today’s announcement, please visit the Box blog.
