HP Data Protector 8 includes new features to help organizations lower costs, increase efficiency

As enterprise data volumes continue to grow each day, organizations face significant challenges in protecting information that is increasingly distributed across physical, virtual and cloud-based networks.

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 11, 2013 — /BackupReview.info/ — HP Data Protector 8, the new version of HP’s flagship enterprise-class backup and recovery offering, includes a range of key features to help global organizations more efficiently and effectively protect their information in the age of distributed big data.

“With the diversity of our operation, we need an enterprise backup application with the agility to meet our capacity, performance and ease of management demands,” said Ryan Burgess, Infrastructure Architect, North Shore Credit Union. “HP Data Protector 8 enables us to efficiently manage the data protection process across our entire organization and eliminate the inefficiencies of point backup products.”

Scalability enhancements address today’s distributed big data demands

  • The new version of HP Data Protector takes the scalability and performance of backup and recovery processes to a whole new level.
  • For the first time, a single backup instance can scale to accommodate thousands of clients, running as many as 100,000 sessions per day.
  • HP Data Protector 8 is capable of managing up to 1 trillion unique file names, which is more than 100 times the scalability of existing traditional enterprise data protection software applications available today.
  • The new offering also represents a significant leap in single-session backup performance and scalability to help address the mission critical demands of data intensive computing environments.
  • HP Data Protector 8 enables protection for up to 50,000 clients in a single management environment and delivers up to 144TB/hour data throughput performance.

Extensive integration with HP Storage solution portfolio
In addition to broad third-party device support, HP Data Protector 8 comes with comprehensive integration support for HP Storage solution offerings. This provides an extensive array of cutting-edge functions and performance to organizations large and small.

HP Data Protector 8 includes support for the newly announced HP StoreOnce Virtual Storage Appliance (VSA) offering for software-defined virtualized remote office environments. This enables federated deduplication to take place in any location of the backup process, including the application source, backup server, and a physical or virtual target system. This provides administrators with a single point of control for deduplication, backup and recovery, and disaster recovery operations.

HP Data Protector 8 also features a bandwidth control capability that allows administrators to configure a maximum bandwidth limit for the backup process. This is a critical feature for protecting data from remote- and branch-office environments and helps cut costs by eliminating the need for a dedicated network.

HP 3PAR StoreServ customers also can benefit from HP Data Protector’s Zero Downtime Backup (ZDB) capability. Now extended to Oracle and SAP on HP-UX, this integration provides extensive snapshot management to protect application data, producing additional copies to deduplicated secondary storage without impacting the production environment.

Enterprise-class data protection for VMware environments
HP Data Protector 8 also includes several new enhancements that simplify the protection of large VMware environments. Virtual machines can be restored as new instances, without needing to overwrite the existing virtual machine. HP Data Protector 8 also introduces smart caching on the backup host, delivering an improvement of more than 20 percent on VMware backup performance.

“As organizations deal with larger quantities of data than ever before, they must ensure that backup processes are reliable, efficient and fast,” said David Jones, general manager, Data Protection, HP Autonomy. “Data Protector 8 meets the modern demands of distributed big data by delivering significant upgrades to backup performance and scalability that will make a real difference to the enterprise.”
