Vembu Online Data Backup Expert Tips: A Checklist for Selecting a Cloud Backup Service – Part II

Taking up from where we left off in Part I of this article, let us examine a few more salient points that must be examined before a cloud backup service is selected.

1. How scalable is the service?
Cloud Backup is attractive because it is scalable on demand. So, this is an important consideration. Does your cloud service provider promise scalability on demand? If so, you can handle the data volumes generated during the peaks and lows of business with comfort. You can requisition storage as soon as the need arises, and pay for it on usage basis.  This will optimize infrastructure usage and help you reduce costs.

However, you should check out the modus operandi of the scale up / scale down provision in some detail. Some cloud backup services insist on implementing scale up / scale down slabs with fixed rates for transition from one slab to another. As a result, you may find that optimizing your storage space and costs of storage may be only marginally beneficial. You could end up paying for more storage space than actually used.

2. Do I believe the claims made by the service provider?
You will be told that there are several unseen benefits that accrue from use of cloud backup services and you may be provided with a long list of such benefits. The veracity of these claims will have to be evaluated by you.

For instance, a cloud service may claim high speed data access as a plus. You need to remember that the bandwidth available at the point of access will make a difference to the quality of access and the speed of data transfer.  Do not take them at their word. Download the fully functional trial version of the software and test it out for yourself from multiple locations!

So, what are your takeaways from this discussion?  Read the Service Level agreement thoroughly. Do not miss the fine print! Make a reality check on every claim. Use your common sense and weigh the risks and opportunities. There is no one size fits all solution. There are pluses and minuses to every solution. You need a cloud backup service that fits in with your needs with complete understanding and awareness of what you will get and what you will miss by selecting a specific cloud backup service.
