Vembu Online Data Backup Expert Tips: Data Backup as a Service

Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) is best defined as a remote management of data backup services on behalf of subscribed users of the service. The service targets very specific market segments. The LAN based backup systems, provide a near real time transaction level replication of data and open file backups to consumers with beta software offerings and free trial backup services.  The offer encapsulates the complexities of electronic vaulting of data, lowers risk and reduces cost of investing in storage media.

At the lower end, application API provided by online backup companies collects, compresses, encrypts and transfers data to the backup service provider’s servers automatically as scheduled. At the higher end, backup-as-a-service may provide continuous data protection (CDP) to clients who subscribe to their service.

Therefore, it is no wonder that small and medium sized enterprises that do not have the resources or where with all to grapple with the complexities of backup, find these services extremely attractive. The perceived benefits listed are:

  • Reduce complexities associated with backups and management of backups
  • Lower capital and operational costs consequent upon the complexity reductions
  • Lower risk especially where the enterprise has a large number of mobile users and remote offices
  • Backup, access, and restore of data

Typical offerings from backup service providers include:

  • Open file backup or backup of files that are in the process of being modified or read and hence are open at the point in time when the backup happens
  • Multi platform backup or backup of data across Windows, Macintosh or Linux/Unix platforms
  • Multi computer backup or backup of data from multiple computers or servers on a network from a single computer or device
  • Multi site backup or backup of data from the primary site and also remote sites seamlessly
  • Continuous Data protection (CDP) or offer to backup data continuously or as per a pre-defined schedule
  • Online authorized remote access to files via a web browser anywhere, anytime
  • Data encryption and compression offers using lossless compression algorithms; differential compression algorithms and standard encryption methodologies during data transfer
  • User configurable bandwidth use

Costs for these services are based on:

  • The amount of data being backed up
  • The number of computers or servers that are covered by the service
  • The type of version control selected
  • Data retention periods and archiving options selected
  • Whether the Customer wants a managed or unmanaged backup service

However, online backup services are not without accompanying problems. The enterprise builds a dependency and is forced to trust a third party with mission critical data. They are forced to adapt and limit the data back up scale to the data backup limitations of the online data backup service provider. They must also accept a service offer that places heavy reliance on Internet and network services for backup and also accept that complications can arise if there is a move from one online backup service provider to another in terms of getting data back and end of contract fees.

Vembu enables MSPs to provide simple, automatic, secure, and encrypted cloud backup services.
