Comment on the iomart Acquisition of Backup Technology

Glasgow, UK based iomart Group announced on Tuesday Oct. 1, 2013 that it has acquired cloud backup and disaster recovery services provider, Backup Technology (BTL) for £23 Million Pounds or $37 Million USD. Apparently, BTL had been on iomart`s “radar for some time”, as a result of BTL carving out an enviable position in the market.

BTL, headquartered in Leeds, UK, has around 200 enterprise clients, in addition to its thousands of SMB clients and resellers. Some of BTL’s impressive enterprise clients include: Siemens, British Red Cross, BBC, Everton Football Club, Liverpool Football Club, Suzuki, Pernod Ricard, Llyods Register, Motorola, Tullet Prebon, Cheshire Police, and many more.

BTL Background

  • Established in: 2005
  • Revenue in 2012: £5.2 Million GBP ($8.4 Million USD)
  • Retention rate: over 96% client retention rate
  • Positioning: Enterprise specialist, Fully Managed Services
  • Sold for: £23 Million ($37 Million USD)

BTL had managed to scoop up US based Terian Solutions back in 2010. BTL also takes its training procedures seriously; trains its new hires from the ground up, by hiring fresh grads and teaching them from scratch, before sending them for training to Asigra in Toronto, Canada.

What does this Acquisition mean to BTL?
As soon as the acquisition news became public, we contacted Ritchie Fiddes, co-founder of BTL. He was gracious enough to take our call and spend an hour explaining the events that led to the acquisition. In part, here is what he said: “Many companies were interested to acquiring BTL. However, we chose iomart because we saw a very strong fit between our people, our services and support ethic. Our staff and customers are delighted that BTL is now part of the iomart group and I personally am very excited about the opportunity to accelerate the future growth of the business.”

Fiddes continued, “As the growth of cloud services continues to gain momentum, iomart Group provides a perfect fit for BTL to be able to offer its customers additional complimentary services. Being able to plug directly into iomart’s expertise and its enterprise level data centres and fibre network means, we can work with even bigger customers who require the big infrastructure and strong balance sheet that iomart can provide. BTL will continue as a division of iomart with same branding, with all the employees staying in tact; and the only change is that our CEO Simon Chappell will leave the company to pursue other opportunities. Going forward, I will continue to work in my present role as Sales and Service Director.”

“We are delighted to welcome BTL to the Group as they have achieved ground breaking progress in the delivery of cloud backup and disaster recovery and have been on our radar for some time,” Angus MacSween, CEO of iomart Group said. “BTL gives iomart a solid and well-established platform to grow further from, with a very good enterprise customer base and little crossover from the existing Group base. It’s a very good strategic fit, complementing our portfolio of existing products.”

“This is a really exciting moment for BTL,” says Simon Chappell, co-founder of BTL who is leaving BTL to pursue other opportunities. “We very much admire what Angus and his team have done in establishing iomart as the leading player in the market for cloud services in the UK and can see that our backup expertise and services are a great fit. iomart will be a great home for BTL.”

Mr. Fiddes has been conducting a monthly conference call with us here at since 2008, informing us on the status of the company and the deals they have been making. We have always been impressed with Ritchie and BTL`s management team. BTL has managed to secure huge contracts from internationally recognized brands, like the BBC.

BackupReview believes that this acquisition is a good news not only for BTL founders, but also for the cloud backup industry in general.

Our congratulations goes to everyone at BTL.
