In traditional network deployments each network device has a dedicated control and forwarding plane (from control path to software), but in SDN deployments the behavior of the network is defined by software, outside of the forwarding path. The technology replaces complex, time-consuming manual configuration and provisioning with effortless automated network configuration.

In the SDN architecture, the control and data planes are decoupled, network intelligence is centralized and the underlying network infrastructure is automatically configured from the applications themselves. HP’s SDN architecture:

• Lets network managers efficiently configure, manage, secure, and optimize network resources through automated SDN programs that they can write (programs do not depend on proprietary software)

• Is Open Standards-based and vendor-neutral: When implemented through Open Standards, SDN simplifies network design and operation; SDN controllers, rather than multiple, vendor-specific devices and protocols provide instructions.

In short, the SDN architecture is dynamic, manageable, cost-effective, adaptable and a facilitator of today’s high-bandwidth, applications—such as big data analytics. SDN can be implemented in any network where control, security and application performance are important. Organizations can choose pure SDN or a hybrid approach (where existing switches maintain their functions).
