A new study conducted by NovaStor, in conjunction with reseller partners, takes a closer look at the efficiency of common backup solutions when tasked with backing up average file-sizes for small businesses, and unusually large files.

AGOURA HILLS, CA – October 14, 2014 – /BackupReview.info/ — NovaStor, an international provider of award-winning backup solutions, has released results of a study conducted by its engineers that puts common backup solutions through their paces to test both common file-size environments and extraordinarily large files.

With businesses requiring data protection solutions that provide peak performance in environments specific to their industry, NovaStor has placed a priority on tuning the NovaBACKUP® product line to match intended markets and surpass customer expectations. Based on a statistic which averages the most common small business backup job, the primary benchmark was conducted based on roughly 400,000 files for a total of 370GB before compression, storing to an external storage device over USB3.0 technology.

The results of this benchmark1 were reported as follows:

Time to Complete Backup
• NovaBACKUP Business Essentials 16 – Time Elapsed: 1 hours, 52 minutes
• Competitor A – 2 hours, 16 minutes
• Competitor B – 2 hours, 36 minutes

Peak CPU Usage
• NovaBACKUP Business Essentials 16 – 0.1%
• Competitor A – 0.8%
• Competitor B – 0.4%

Peak Memory Usage
• NovaBACKUP Business Essentials 16 – 0.2%
• Competitor A – 1.2%
• Competitor B – 2.9%

( Complete competitive analysis located on the NovaStor Blog )

Understanding that even small businesses are occasionally working with very large files, additional benchmarking2 was conducted using the specification of 250 files, at roughly 5GB each, with a more limited throughput to an external storage device using USB2.0 technology.

Time to Complete Backup
• NovaBACKUP Business Essentials 16 – Time Elapsed: 11 hours, 9 minutes
• Competitor A – 10 hours, 59 minutes
• Competitor B – 20 hours, 50 minutes

Peak CPU Usage
• NovaBACKUP Business Essentials 16 – 3.7%
• Competitor A – 6.8%
• Competitor B – 5.3%

Peak Memory Usage
• NovaBACKUP Business Essentials 16 – 0.5%
• Competitor A – 1.4%
• Competitor B – 2.9%

In this more extreme environment, the top performers completed in roughly the same amount of time, with NovaBACKUP leading the pack in both CPU usage and Peak Memory usage.

The importance of these results is further heightened by the technology budgetary constraints that a majority of small businesses face. Backup software must be efficient enough to protect data with minimal technology resources, and in shared environments without the need for a dedicated physical server. Should intervention be required by the network administrator in the event of software conflict or job failure, the business will incur additional loss in terms of both cost and productivity. Solutions such as NovaBACKUP from NovaStor have been designed as a “backup for the rest of us”, performing impressively in limited environments to provide small businesses with a reliable data-protection solution and meet them where they are in the evolution of their technology environment.
