Kicking off Backup Awareness Month, survey of more than 850 IT professionals points to rampant data loss from ransomware; backup is foundation for endpoint data security

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – June 1, 2015 — /BackupReview.info/ — Code42, the leader in endpoint data protection and security for business and enterprise, today kicks off Backup Awareness Month with data revealing that the majority of IT leaders have addressed malware or ransomware in their organizations, and that protecting data living on endpoints is a central pillar of their data security strategies.

Code42 surveyed more than 850 IT decision makers from customers around the world via third-party content platform TechValidate. The results show that enterprises identify keeping data secure from malware, including ransomware, as a top concern. According to the survey, 64 percent of IT organizations experienced data loss at the endpoint from malware or ransomware prior to implementing endpoint backup.

The survey also found that endpoint backup plays a prominent role in responding to potential security threats to corporate data, and that Code42 endpoint data protection helps customers hedge against data loss in the following ways:

  • 34 percent of organizations surveyed used backup to identify the data that existed on a lost or stolen machine, allowing them to accurately assess potential exposure.
  • 25 percent recovered from ransomware attacks using endpoint backup.
  • 60 percent secured data with endpoint backup in the event of employee departures.
  • 51 percent protected data with endpoint backup before a migration or encryption project.

“Ransomware attacks and insider threats drive the need for a comprehensive endpoint data security strategy. In addition to endpoint data protection, our customers use our solutions to mitigate security threats,” said Mitch Coopet, co-founder and CEO at Code42. “For instance, many CISOs are dealing with employee churn—when employees depart and take corporate data with them. We provide the data visibility and historical forensics for security professionals and IT teams that reduces the time and cost of remediation, and works with their existing security stack.”

Backup Awareness Month is held annually in June to build awareness about the increasing role of data in people’s lives and the importance of regular backups. To celebrate, Code42 is releasing an eBook titled “Beyond backup: The benefits you haven’t thought of,” which takes a fresh look at the many reasons enterprises implement endpoint backup to fight data loss from cybercrime, stolen devices, employee churn and more.
