Reports offer insight and best practices on how law firms can use information governance to achieve business goals, manage “dark” data, create global policy, and increase document security

BOSTON, MA – August 18, 2015 — /BackupReview.info/ — With information governance (IG) a core part of their daily operations, law firms now can draw from a series of peer-written reports to continue the expansion of their IG programs. Published by Iron Mountain® Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the storage and information management company, these reports were developed by law firm information leaders to focus on some of the key issues and challenges that firms face in managing information compliantly and effectively.

The reports, the fourth in a series on law firm topics, are the result of months of collaborative study and discussion by industry information governance professionals from the Law Firm Information Governance Symposium held in Atlanta earlier this year. Chartered by the symposium’s steering committee, these professionals participated in subject-matter task forces that explored key information governance challenges facing law firms.

The reports focus on the following topic areas:

  • “Dark” Data – Examines the pressing problem of ever-increasing amounts of legacy or “dark” data in law firms and offers best practices to bring this information under control today and into the future.
  • Information Governance as a Management Strategy – A discussion of the role of an IG organization within a law firm and how it can help the firm achieve established business goals.
  • Global Information Governance Considerations – Explores various information governance requirements and expectations when conducting business globally.
  • Transitioning from an Open Environment to Closed Environment – Focuses on factors to consider, and possible steps to take, when contemplating increased information security in the firm.

“As the practice of information governance has grown within law firms, new issues and challenges continue to emerge that expand the scope and challenge of information management,” said Sue Trombley, managing director of Thought Leadership, Iron Mountain. “We’ve seen this evolution firsthand at our symposium, led by the industry’s brightest IG minds that drive the discussion around issues like staffing, data management and the global expansion of programs, as well as the continued emphasis on security and information protection. These reports are the culmination of those discussions, and are the result of the careful examination of the task forces who developed, refined and shaped them using their real-world expertise. We’re proud and honored to be able to publish these reports to help influence the discussion and practice of information governance in law firms.”
