Woburn, MA – May 13, 2021 — /BackupReview.info/ — Kaspersky has released a new report exploring users’ attitudes toward updating their devices. Taken in April 2021, the survey report found that half of respondents commonly put off installing updates. At the same time, however, four-in-ten respondents globally (38% in the U.S.) said that they use time spent waiting for updates productively.

Updates to devices are not only necessary to gain access to new features, they also help to maintain a high level of security. Vendors regularly test their offerings to find new potential vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers. The timely installation of updates can serve as an effective defense against cybercriminals.

Thirty-nine percent of global respondents said they enjoy the break from technology while updates are being made, while only 31% in the U.S. said the same.

Many users preferred to shift to other activities while updates install. When their devices are unavailable, 32% of American respondents said they do something to relax (watch TV or read a book), 16% in the U.S. said they distract themselves by cooking, and 13% preferred sports or going for a walk (compared to 9% globally). Twenty-two percent of Americans continued to do what they were doing, simply switching to another device.

Despite the benefits of such pauses, when they receive update notifications on their devices, 50% of global users (51% in the U.S.) usually postpone the installation of updates. The most popular reason was that users are busy at work (30%), followed by options where users did not want to stop using their device in that moment (26%). Twenty-five percent (27% in the U.S.) did not want to close the application. All in all, 63% of global users saw no harm in a delay, while American users were a bit more disciplined, with only 54% saying the same.

“It makes complete sense to switch to another device while the gadget you were using originally is going through an update cycle,” said Maria Namestnikova, head of GReAT Russia, Kaspersky. “Playing sports, cooking, or a little meditation could be a timely break from the work day, helping people to relax and reboot. We were pleased to see in our survey that many people already follow healthy practices, and we call on others to follow their example. Doing so will not only help to improve your mood but can also increase productivity.”

In support of its new “Pain in the Neck” campaign to promote software updates, Kaspersky has collaborated with blogger, yoga teacher, and personal trainer, Shona Vertue, on a short course of simple exercises that can be completed during the installation of updates. The video course itself is very simple and can be performed at home by people of all abilities. It is available here — https://usa.kaspersky.com/about/press-releases
