“Beyond the excitement of the Wasabi Fenway Bowl itself, what we’re truly most proud of is the opportunity to support the Honor Roll program and the incredible educators who have gone above and beyond in the unimaginable circumstances COVID has wrought,” said Michael Welts, chief marketing officer, Wasabi Technologies. “We are honored to recognize these amazing individuals, and to help them and their students thrive in and out of the classroom for years to come.”

The inaugural Wasabi Fenway Bowl, produced by Fenway Sports Management and ESPN Events, will be played Wednesday, December 29 at 11 a.m. ET at historic Fenway Park, featuring a matchup between SMU and the University of Virginia televised on ESPN. It will be the first college football bowl game to be played at Fenway Park and the first Division 1 bowl game to be held in New England. More information on the Wasabi Fenway Bowl can be found at the game’s website: www.fenwaybowl.com, on Facebook or on Twitter and Instagram @FenwayBowl.

“We are very excited to kick off the Wasabi Fenway Bowl and to usher in a new sports tradition for the region, but we are particularly proud of the impact made off the field through the Honor Roll program,” said Mark Lev, President of Fenway Sports Management. “The perseverance demonstrated by educators in spite of the challenges of the pandemic has been incredibly inspiring and we deeply appreciate their commitment to students across New England. We are proud to celebrate the finalists and Monster Finalists while awarding funds to support their work.”

As part of the Wasabi Fenway Bowl’s appreciation for the incredible impact the three Monster Finalists have on their schools and communities, Fenway Sports Management is proud to partner with Extra Yard for Teachers to provide each of them with $5,000 to be used on DonorsChoose.org. The donations will help these educators buy classroom equipment and materials to support the work that each is doing in their schools and communities.

This year’s three Monster Finalists are:

Joshua Curhan, a 2nd-grade teacher at Bowman Elementary School in Lexington, whose colleagues appreciate him as an incredible and dedicated teacher. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he has been in his classroom teaching students, working overtime, and finding creative ways to support his students through such difficult times. He often spends his free time coming up with creative games like Jeopardy, and jokes to keep his students engaged both in the classroom and virtually.

Terry Crawley, a custodian at Barnstable Intermediate School is known to his peers as the best custodian on Cape Cod. Terry takes pride in making sure the school is clean and safe to meet COVID-19 guidelines. He also goes above and beyond his job as a custodian by participating in community events, removing ice off the roof on the coldest of days, and walking teachers out to their cars in the evening when they are working late. During his career, he has worked with students with special needs at the high school level and continues to be a mentor to these young people.

Katie Wood, an English teacher at The Gilbert School in Winsted, Connecticut not only teaches all levels of high school English, from general, to AP Language, she also runs the yearbook class, student council, coaches girls soccer, and is the Drama Club producer. In her free time, she can often be found supporting her students at athletic events, nominating them for awards, and even creating t-shirt campaigns for students’ milestone achievements, demonstrating her commitment to her students both in and out of the classroom.
