Unifying over 200 VM backup methods reduced operational management load, resulting in an enhanced user experience and increased resilency

JAPAN, Sept. 15, 2022 — / BackupReview.info / — Veeam® Software, the leader in backup, recovery and data management solutions that deliver Modern Data Protection, announced today that KDDI Corporation, a company engaged in a wide range of telecommunications and other businesses, chose Veeam Backup & Replication™ to protect its internal private cloud infrastructure. KDDI’s new backup solution unified their backup methods and reduced operational management load all while protecting the company’s critical services for its social infrastructure. KDDI also leveraged Veeam Universal Licences (VULs) for their corporate customers, which chould also be used on both KDDI’s internal and corporate cloud platforms.

As Japan’s leading telecommunications carrier, KDDI offers a wide variety of solutions for individual and corporate customers. In the past, infrastructure for KDDI’s various services was created separately. To eliminate silos and respond quickly to changes in the market environment, KDDI began to standardize its service infrastructure across the entire company around 2010. After that, the company began building a company-wide private cloud platform that was used internally, called CKKB (a.k.a.: “internal cloud”). As a result, over 200 service applications now run on this internal cloud platform.

With multiple platforms in the internal cloud infrastructure, like Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Hardware as a Service (HaaS), plus backups performed via different methods, KDDI faced an increase in the company’s operational management load. Furthermore, the unification and restructuring of the company’s backup systems became an issue in the development of KDDI’s recovery environment. To face these challenges, KDDI chose Veeam Backup & Replication because it solved these issues. Also, VUL’s flexibility allowed the company to use these licenses both internally and for cloud services for corporate customers.

With Veeam, one thing that cannot be overlooked is the 3-2-1-1-0 Rule, which means maintaing at least three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one copy being off-site and one copy offline, with verified backups that have zero errors.Through this best practice, KDDI can secure immutable and untamperable offsite storage while seeing zero backup errors.

With Veeam, KDDI can leverage its knowledge from its internal cloud service to provide cloud services to its corporate customers as well. The company added necessary functions to its cloud services for these customers, like backup options for virtual servers that use Veeam and Microsoft 365 backup to meet the growing demand for teleworking following the COVID-19 pandemic. KDDI achieved significant results overall.

“By deploying Veeam for backups of private clouds for internal use, we were able to enjoy a number of benefits, like unifying backup methods, which reduced the burden of operations and management, and improved the user convenience,” Takeshi Maehara, general manager of KDDI’s platform technology department said. “We have also been able to link this experience to the development of new services for our customers, which has also been a great achievement. In the future, we are considering expanding the scope of application to the Kubernetes-based container platform running in our internal cloud. In addition, as we enter the full-fledged 5G era, we are planning to further develop our Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) services. As we do, we have high expectations for the evolution of Veeam, since backing up the various resources scattered across the network will be a major issue.”

“We are honored that KDDI, one of Japan’s leading telecommunications companies, selected our flagship product, Veeam Backup & Replication, for its internal cloud backup system,” said Masakiyo Furudate, vice president and country manager of Veeam Japan. “With the diversification of services and the increase in the volume of data handled, the risk of cyberattacks and system failures are higher than ever. Veeam will continue to provide KDDI with reliable data protection for its social infrastructure, securing both their internal and customer cloud data.”
