Google Docs’ new offline feature is a welcome addition to the free productivity suite, but the apps lag behind Microsoft software in features.

In my experience, the feature works well. Hosting specialist Mosso takes aim at Amazon’s S3 with rival storage service

Still in its relative infancy, the so-called storage cloud is producing more and more services in response to demand for Web-based hosted storage.

In the latest example, Mosso, a subsidiary of hosting specialist Rackspace, today unveiled its “CloudFS” service, which it says will compete with Amazon’s S3 offering.

Up until now, Mosso focused its cloud efforts mostly on hosted servers. Now, the vendor offers CloudFS as a way for users to store and access data via the Internet.

“It’s Internet-scale, file-based storage,” says John Engates, the RackSpace CTO, explaining that the service is aimed at photo and video applications, as well as users looking to perform more traditional data backups.

Italian start-up Memopal has said it wants to make storage so cheap that “it will be cheaper to buy more storage space than delete unwanted files.”

This outrageous claim comes as the company launches an online backup service to compete with US services such as Mozy and Carbonite, based on its own storage file system.

The start-up was formed in December and the storage product, currently based on a Windows client, is now moving out of the public beta-test phase, Memopal said on Tuesday.

The product is based on MGFS, Memopal’s own customised file system, designed to store up to 100 million terabytes in a single file system, according to the company.

As our world becomes more digitized, the files we store on our computers are becoming increasingly more important. Instead of keeping handwritten letters in a shoebox, we correspond with family members using e-mail. If we use digital cameras, we often keep our photo albums on our computers.

In late March, Chrysler Leasing sent a letter to some customers warning them a tape containing some of their personal data - such as names, addresses and social insurance numbers - had gone missing while United Parcel Service was transporting it from Chrysler to a credit reporting agency.

Access to the data would not be easy and would require special software, Chrysler said, but the company advised customers to watch out for improper use of the information.

We have reports saying that MediaMax is the process of changing their services over to TheLinkUp.com. The reports indicate that the older site, MediaMax.com is shut down and the migration of data failed.

One reader indicated that “A lot of Mediamax users got no notice and have lost all their files, and many of them probably still don’t know what’s happening”.
