Data Deposit Box Cloud Backup Expert Tips: Accessing Backed up Data on the Web Securely

One of the many benefits of using an cloud backup service is that you can access your stored files anywhere, anytime; and from any machine that has an Internet connection. This can be handy when you can’t use your computer because of theft, hardware failure or even when you are just in another location. Most cloud backup vendors provide some kind of web application that gives you access to most of the features of the backup agent that was installed at the time of subscribing to the cloud backup service. Using any browser, this enables you to log in to your account, manage your files and even restore them if needed on a different computer.

How do these web applications work? Its useful to understand that the primary concern should be security and that no unauthorized person can access and view your files without proper authentication and authorization. When a user or an organization subscribes to an online backup service they are asked to set up authentication and authorization when they create an account.

Then a corporate administrator can assign individual rights and permissions to different users depending on the level of access that needs to be provided for particular roles. Users can then login in to their account using the web interface or the client interface by entering their user id and password. The user id and password are matched or authenticated against the data stored in the authentication table and the user is permitted to access the data only if a match is found.

The ability to access your backed up data using a web interface means that your critical business information can now be highly available anytime, anywhere to anyone you authorize. Many mobile workers and sales teams are finding this an effective way to share information and have remote access to information stored on the backup server. Security is maintained for the organization and administrators can usually access logs of all users who access and view the enterprise data. This feature is extremely useful in audit trails and in checking back on users who have accessed and viewed the enterprise data during any given period of time.

Web access to backed-up data is also critical for business continuity in the event of a disaster. Even when the entire IT infrastructure of an organization has been rendered unusable, the business can be back up and running on new hardware within a short span of time.

Some cloud backup service providers are also integrating other services into their web application interface. Some of the most popular provide file sharing, remote desktop access and synchronization services along with applications for mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad.

At Data Deposit Box, we are committed to helping our customers be successful businesses – ones that are highly mobile, agile and productive. Through a single, simple and secure access point it is now easy for them protect their digital assets as well as access, view and work with backed up data on the online server from their mobile device and an internet connection.
