Datos IO Cited in the New Gartner Category of Cloud Data Backup for Providing Cloud-Scale 3rd Platform Protection and Recovery

SANTA CLARA, CA – July 19, 2016 — /BackupReview.info/ — Datos IO, a provider of cloud-scale data protection and recovery for 3rd Platform applications and databases, today announced that it has been recognized as a Sample Vendor in Gartner’s “Hype Cycle for Storage Technologies, 20161” and “Hype Cycle for Small and Midsize Businesses (SMB), 20162” reports.

Gartner recognized Datos IO as a sample vendor to the newly defined Cloud Backup category, which replaces the former Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) technology category. In its Hype Cycle report1, Gartner states “Cloud data backup refers to policy-based backup tools that can back up and restore data generated natively in the cloud. Such data could be generated by software as a service (SaaS) applications or by Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) compute services.” The report further states, “Backup of data generated natively in public cloud is an emerging requirement as more and more organizations realize that cloud providers are not responsible for data loss, even when data is generated in the cloud.”

“When we started this journey more than two years ago, we were among the first to recognize the need to pioneer data protection for web-scale applications deployed on next-generation databases, either in PaaS or IaaS environments (Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure),” said Tarun Thakur, CEO and co-founder of Datos IO. “We believe Gartner’s inclusion of Datos IO in the two hype cycle reports validates our foresight and the massive opportunity we see for cloud-scale data protection as enterprises adopt and scale cloud based infrastructures for their mission critical applications.”

Third (3rd) Platform applications – which include analytics, IoT, SaaS and real-time operational intelligence – are driving the increasing popularity of next-generation scale-out databases such as Cassandra, MongoDB, Apache HBase and Oracle Big Data, as well as cloud databases such as Amazon DynamoDB and Microsoft DocumentDB. To address the new backup and recovery requirements of 3rd Platform applications on IaaS and PaaS based infrastructures, Datos IO launched RecoverX, an industry-first data protection software product developed to help application owners, database administrators and DevOps manage, recover, and scale their mission critical applications without compromising data management needs in the cloud.

Datos IO’s RecoverX empowers companies to deploy and scale newer applications in the cloud without risking data loss, and is currently in use by a multitude of businesses that have on-boarded mission-critical, 3rd Platform applications on cloud databases such as Cassandra and MongoDB.

Early adoption use-cases include:

  • A leading entertainment discovery platform selected RecoverX for backup and recovery of their MongoDB database for operational recovery, and realized a TCO savings of ~80% over the competing backup and recovery solution.
  • A leading financial consumer banking company built a real-time customer event hub to capture all customer touch points across multiple divisions to improve customer service. They required backup and recovery platform for this application, which was deployed on Cassandra database to meet IT compliance and governance requirements.

Datos IO RecoverX is founded upon patent-pending Consistent Orchestrated Distributed Recovery (CODR™) technology, a seminal data management architecture that is no longer dependent on media servers and transfers data in parallel to and from file-based and object-based secondary storage. RecoverX, powered by CODR, delivers cluster-consistent backups that are highly space efficient yet available in native formats, as well as application-ready and repair-free recovery solutions at scale for the next-generation of cloud-native applications and distributed databases.
