Cloud Backup Expert Tips: Reduce Risk with a Comprehensive Salesforce Backup and Recovery Strategy

Data loss and corruption happens, but it is avoidable with a comprehensive backup and recovery process. That’s why Salesforce recommends working with a “partner backup solution that can be found on the AppExchange.”

What is a comprehensive backup and recovery process anyways? A comprehensive backup and recovery process requires the ability to backup both data and metadata daily, as well as the ability to find and recover quickly. Without a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy in place, your business could be at serious risk of user-inflicted data loss and corruption.

How well are companies minimizing their risk? Not very well at all…88% of companies have no comprehensive backup and recovery strategy, according to the 2020 State of Salesforce Data Protection survey results.

Why should you have a comprehensive backup and recovery for Salesforce?

Being able to recover is even more important than backing up. If you have a comprehensive backup and recovery strategy, then you’ve proven through testing that you can not only back up your data and metadata, but you can also completely recover that data and metadata. Not all Salesforce backup and recovery options are created equal.

If you’re not backing up, you’ll have to rely on Salesforce’s Data Recovery Service. For their own uptime and availability, as well as Disaster Recovery purposes, Salesforce replicates clients’ production environment and stores it on backup tapes for 90 days. If you discover the data loss within three months, Salesforce Data Recovery services can look for your data in the tape backups based on parameters that you give them and send you your data in .CSV file format for a cost of $10,000 and a six to eight week waiting period. After receiving your .CSV backup files, you would have to manually complete the recovery process.

If you’re using the Weekly Export, you will download a weekly or monthly set of .CSV files for the standard and custom objects that you specify. These files must be manually downloaded each week within 48 hours of receiving the download link. It is then your responsibility to store the files in a secure location, and in an organized manner. If you should suffer a data loss or corruption, there are a number of required steps to restore data with the Weekly Export, and importantly, the relationships using the many .CSV files contained within your Weekly Export .zip files. You will need to be familiar with Microsoft Excel functions to perform critical steps within this process.

Test your Salesforce backup and recovery process to check that it works well for your organization’s business continuity and compliance needs.
