The Solidarity and Social Investment Fund (FOSIS) is an agency of the Government of Chile, created on October 26, 1990. The agency works with nearly 120,000 members and has a budget of 80 billion pesos. FOSIS’s IT infrastructure consists of two sites with approximately 16 physical servers and more than 100 virtual machines. Virtual machines store various databases, applications, file servers, and web servers. As FOSIS reports directly to the Chilean government, all its data must be transparent to the public. The agency depends on IT to keep all its servers running steadily and ensure that data is always available. As a result, a solid backup and replication solution that is designed specifically for virtual environments is required to protect the agency’s data and guarantee high-demand services are not being compromised.

The previous solution that the IT team used for data protection failed to meet all the expectations of FOSIS. Virtual machines were not backed up efficiently and different problems arose from time to time. FOSIS needed to ensure rapid backup of all Hyper-V virtual machines and reliable replication of those virtual machines to its secondary site. A complete solution was needed whose cost and functionality would be suitable for FOSIS. Simplicity, high performance, and positive feedback from other companies were some of the main criteria FOSIS was looking for in a solution.

With Hyper-V replication, the IT team can create and maintain copies of Hyper-V VMs on a target host. In a disaster situation, all workloads can be failed over to VM replicas so that operations can continue as usual. Currently, with VM backup and replication, FOSIS protects more than 80% of its server infrastructure.
