BELLEVUE, Wash — Jan. 28, 2022 — / BackupReview.info / — Synology® Inc., a leader in data storage and backup, announces today the importance of safeguarding your personal data by celebrating Data Privacy Day. With more than 4.66 billion people in the world who are active internet users, Data Privacy Day seeks to raise awareness and promote best practices for privacy and data protection.

So far in 2021, 6.3 million data breaches were sent to Washingtonians according to the AG’s office in Olympia1. Nationally, businesses are hacked every 11 seconds in this country. In addition, more than four-fifths of data breaches (86%) occurred in 2021 were financially motivated2.

Synology recommends three crucial steps users should do to protect vital data:

  • Encryption – Encrypted files are not readable without the encryption key. Whether it’s a person or a machine trying to read data, encrypting files provides protection from bad actors, even if data is on a PC, NAS or in the cloud. This also keeps data protected if drives are lost, damaged or stolen. Click here to learn more about encrypting files on a Synology NAS — https://blog.synology.com/data-privacy-day-one-resolution-for-2021
  • Enable HTTPS – By enabling HTTPS, sensitive data is encrypted before transferring over the internet or other networks, ensuring that malicious third parties will not be able to intercept and view the data. Click here to learn more about setting up HTTPS on Synology NAS — https://kb.synology.com/en-my/DSMUC/tutorial/How_to_enable_HTTPS_and_create_a_certificate_signing_request_on_your_Synology_Unified_Controller
  • Secure and update user accounts – Data Privacy Day is a good time to ensure all user accounts are up to date with the correct permissions and delete accounts that are old or no longer used. Further, administrators should make sure all user accounts have a unique login name with a strong password. Click here to learn how to manage user privileges on Synology NAS — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yecPU8ffEE
