COLUMBUS, Ohio — September 7, 2022 — / BackupReview.info / — Kasten by Veeam®, the market leader for Kubernetes backup, disaster recovery and mobility, today announced that Cyberlogic, a Veeam Cloud & Services Provider (VCSP) Gold partner, is delivering Backup as a Service (BaaS) to Herotel leveraging Kasten’s industry-leading solution, Kasten K10 by Veeam. As the largest fixed wireless internet service provider in South Africa and a major player in the local fiber industry, Herotel connects 140,000 home and business users to the internet across more than 400 towns and cities in South Africa. The company will benefit from reliable backup and recovery of its Kubernetes data and applications, and the ability to meet aggressive recovery time objectives (RTOs) to ensure service availability for clients.

Based in South Africa, Cyberlogic’s customers include small- to medium-sized enterprises. The company also maintains multiple tier-one partnerships with Fortune 500 companies, including Dell and Microsoft. Cyberlogic provides Herotel with InfrastructureasaService (IaaS) through a cloud tenant for multiple environments, as well as support for Microsoft 365, including change management, training and adoption. In 2021, Herotel decided to move to a cloud-based, containerized development environment to keep pace with market demands, and chose Kubernetes. New features and capabilities bolster Kubernetes security across the board, help apply shift-left security to data protection and assists with continued ecosystem expansion

VALENCIA, Spain – May 16, 2022 — / BackupReview.info / — KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2022 — Kasten by Veeam®, the market leader for Kubernetes backup and disaster recovery, today announced the new Kasten by Veeam K10 V5.0 Kubernetes data management platform. Purpose-built for Kubernetes, this latest release is focused on delivering a comprehensive risk management strategy, streamlined CI/CD pipelines and new ecosystem advancement details that optimize and de-risk Kubernetes investments. These advancements all aim to help the expanding Kubernetes community work more efficiently and securely in cloud native applications.

“As ransomware attacks continue to remain the highest concern for organizations, a comprehensive risk management strategy to help continuously identify risk, protect data, detect attacks and deliver disaster recovery for cloud native applications is crucial,” said Gaurav Rishi, Vice President of Products and Partnerships at Kasten by Veeam. “Our latest release remains focused on helping enterprises minimize the financial impact caused by attacks on data and cloud applications. At the same time, we’re also supporting developer needs for backup solutions that not only integrate with the CI/CD tools they use but pave the way for automation to detect and protect applications as they get deployed.”

Backing up Kubernetes applications while accommodating agile, shift-left development and distributed deployment environments remains a challenge for many organizations. Appliance-based approaches do not properly account for the unique characteristics of Kubernetes and replication doesn’t protect against infrastructure failures, data corruption, data loss or ransomware. Having a cloud native solution in place ensures secure and reliable backup without disrupting workflows or adding complexity that could inhibit innovation.

New key features of Kasten K10 V5.0 include:

  • Security everywhere: Enhanced platform hardening, including KMS integration with AWS KMS and HashiCorp Vault, coupled with the ease of use of Kubernetes-native RBAC objects exposed in UI dashboards, ransomware attack detection with AWS S3 or S3-compatible storage supporting S3 Object Lock, data protection policy guardrails and support for Veeam-hardened Linux repositories with immutability that offers comprehensive ransomware protection.
  • Shift-left applied to data protection: Fully integrated add-ons for newly launched Amazon EKS Blueprints, Level III certified Red Hat OpenShift Operator with full lifecycle capabilities, new built-in Kanister blueprints for MS SQL and PostgreSQL Operator and simplified UX for Operations with new Blueprint Editor for a more intuitive and streamlined workflow, and new Reports Generator for critical metrics.
  • Expanded ecosystem: Enabling integrations with industry-leading technologies and platforms ensures that customers can have freedom of choice in an expanding array of solutions across the ecosystem, including support for Red Hat Marketplace, SUSE Rancher Marketplace, VMWare vSphere with Tanzu and Falco.

“Cloud native applications are being developed at a pace never seen before, and with DevOps and shift-left principles, application deployment in Kubernetes is proving faster and far more scalable. Yet, at the same time, backing up Kubernetes applications remains a constant challenge,” said Danny Allan, CTO at Veeam. “This latest release provides secure backup and recovery for Kubernetes data and applications while eliminating the complexity in deployment and operations for Kubernetes in the enterprise. As more Veeam customers look to leverage Kubernetes, Kasten K10 V5.0’s ease-of-use will be critical to support data protection and backup in their new environments.”

“The alarming rate of ransomware attacks and the increased use of cloud-native application development means it’s only a matter of time before cloud-native applications become more heavily targeted,” said Johnny Yu, Research Manager, Storage and Computing at IDC. “Now more than ever, enterprises need a backup solution that is flexible across multiple clouds and can proactively offer visibility into a potential attack before it happens. With its new K10 V5.0 release, Kasten by Veeam has positioned itself as a solid choice for companies that are looking for comprehensive, end-to-end ransomware protection for Kubernetes environments.”

The capabilities introduced in NEW Kasten K10 V5.0 underscores Kasten’s dedication to Kubernetes users by integrating DevOps and shift-left principles and hardened security. General availability of the new Kasten K10 V5.0 is expected in June. Hardened Kubernetes data management enhances the most comprehensive Kubernetes backup/restore, disaster recovery, and application mobility platform

COLUMBUS, OH – April 28, 2021 — /BackupReview.info/ — Kasten by Veeam®, the market leader for Kubernetes backup and disaster recovery, today announced the availability of the new Kasten K10 v4.0, its award-winning, Kubernetes data management platform. With unparalleled ease of use, end-to-end security, and a rich ecosystem of support across the entire application stack, the latest version of Kasten K10 is the most complete enterprise data management solution to date. Purpose-built for Kubernetes, Kasten K10 v4.0 delivers the industry’s first Kubernetes native ransomware protection capabilities, providing much needed immutability against ransomware attacks.

“Ransomware is one of the most pressing enterprise issues. The most conservative estimates put global ransomware losses upward of $20 billion in 2020[1]. These attacks increasingly target Kubernetes users since container adoption has become a prerequisite for IT modernization and digital transformation,” said Niraj Tolia, President and General Manager, Kasten by Veeam. “Malicious actors know that rapid development, gaps in install, and ongoing backup and operations issues can be easy threat vectors for ransomware. The new ransomware data protection capabilities in Kasten K10 plug these gaps, providing an extremely effective defense against ransomware attacks in Kubernetes environments.”

The capabilities introduced in the new Kasten K10 v4.0 underscore Kasten’s dedication to Kubernetes users, integrating cloud native architecture principles and hardened security capabilities into a Kubernetes-native platform that delivers continuous environment and performance optimization. Kasten K10 v4.0 is the company’s most significant update to its Kubernetes data management platform since its acquisition by Veeam, enabling DevOps and PlatformOps teams to effectively address the threat of ransomware in containerized environments. Kasten K10 v4.0 also includes a number of new partnership certifications and enhanced support for more data services. Additionally, the updated platform introduces several enhancements for ease of use that refine multi-cluster support with advanced automation capabilities for simplified backup and restore.

Key new features include:

Security:

  • Kubernetes data protection to make immutability possible for protection against ransomware, malicious insider attacks, or accidental deletions

Ease of Use:

  • Application-centric policies enabling authorized users to create Kasten K10 policies in an application’s namespace for protecting only that specific application

Expanded Ecosystem Support:

  • Rich ecosystem integrations with support for HPE Ezmeral Container Platform, Nutanix Karbon, Red Hat OpenShift, Microsoft Azure Stack, and backup to NFS targets

“Evaluator Group research shows that cybersecurity and data protection have received a significant increase in attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is in large part because ransomware attacks continue to become more frequent and more sophisticated,” said Krista Macomber, Senior Analyst, Evaluator Group. “Protecting against these types of attacks as enterprises prepare for their adoption of production and business-critical Kubernetes environments is critical. Capabilities such as those made available in Kasten K10 v4.0 can simplify the process of shoring up Kubernetes environments from ransomware, better positioning customers to avoid gaps in coverage that could lead to extremely costly data loss and downtime.”

“Kubernetes has quickly become one of the core enablers of hybrid-cloud, but it’s quick adoption in the enterprise has made it a likely target of cyberattacks, particularly ransomware,” said Kris Inapurapu, VP of Business Development, MinIO. “Immutability for Kubernetes applications, like what is delivered by K10 v4.0, in combination with consistent, performant object storage creates scalable and resilient backups that provide organizations with hardened defenses against the threat of ransomware and other malicious attacks.”

“As organizations aim for greater simplicity and deployment flexibility, containers and Kubernetes have become an important element of a multi-cloud data management strategy,” said Paul Speciale, Chief Product Officer, Scality. “Within the cloud-native ecosystem, however, Kubernetes backups have become prime targets of ransomware attacks. In these environments, applications and data need to be accessible and portable, but also hardened with protection capabilities like those Kasten provides. K10 v4.0 ensures organizations reap the benefits of easy-to-use, but ultra-resilient backup and disaster recovery capabilities as they scale their services and workloads without the looming threat of ransomware. Scality fully supports backups from Kasten K10 with data immutability over the S3 API and object locking.”

New Kasten K10 v4.0 will be featured during KubeCon EU + CloudNativeCon EU 2021 — https://www.kasten.io/kubecon — as well as VeeamON 2021 — https://www.veeam.com/veeamon

This achievement concludes a momentous year for Kasten in which it was acquired by Veeam, the leader in Backup solutions that deliver Cloud Data Management™, and drove record adoption for its Kubernetes data management platform.

“2020 introduced countless challenges that will have a lasting impact on us personally and professionally. But it also showed us how important Kasten is in the fabric of the industry and communities it’s part of,” said Niraj Tolia, President and General Manager, Kasten. “We’re excited to kick off 2021 on a high note, having achieved several prestigious industry awards and recognition as a Leader and Outperformer in the GigaOm Radar for Kubernetes Data Protection in the last year. We are continuing this momentum alongside Veeam to address the data management needs of modern enterprises that rely on technologies that support a strong Kubernetes ecosystem, like the Kasten data management platform.”

Gartner predicts that by 2022, more than 75% of global organizations will be running containerized applications in production, up from less than 30% today.[1] Kasten currently protects millions of containers in production and can scale to protect massive multi-cluster deployments with multiple hundreds of nodes in enterprise environments. The company continues to see significant interest in container-specific data management solutions from high-performance enterprise segments like banking and the financial sector, 5G, and edge computing. For industries like these that rely heavily on Kubernetes, Kasten released two major commercial updates to its platform in the past year, v2.5 and v3.0, as well as countless capabilities and features that accommodate multi-tenant cloud environments, automate data migration, and deliver scalable backup, disaster recovery and application mobility across enterprise Kubernetes deployments.

“Kasten has been instrumental in our approach to providing new strategies for enterprise grade data protection to our customers with containers and microservices in our new private cloud offering. Leveraging Kasten, Visma now provides a secure Kubernetes-native data management BaaS (backup as a service) platform to ensure SLAs are met for customers with critical applications and strict backup/restore and disaster recovery requirements to protect against accidental data loss, issues from ransomware, or a catastrophic event,” said Karim Blidi, System Manager, Visma.

The rapidly changing needs of digital enterprises alongside accelerated Kubernetes adoption is fueling significant demand for Kubernetes-native data management solutions. As a result, Kasten is quickly growing, tripling its headcount as it expands in the Americas and internationally across EMEA. Kasten’s expansion has been aided by its acquisition by Veeam, enabling the company to increase R&D, promote sales efforts, and enhance customer support across geographies, industries, and markets as they embrace future-ready architectures.

“The world of enterprise data protection is quickly changing—it’s on the cusp of a major evolution,” said Christophe Bertrand, Senior Analyst, ESG. “As businesses transition from on-prem infrastructure and legacy models for backup, disaster recovery, and mobility to hybrid or cloud-centric models, our research shows that the use of data to support digital transformation will emphasize the role of intelligent data management and protection in enterprise IT operations. The data management ecosystem will be largely influenced by the role that supporting technologies like Kubernetes will play in orchestrating enterprise applications and infrastructure. Recent ESG research shows that organizations must improve their abilities to support changing container workflows and modalities as the industry works toward more autonomous and intelligent data management capabilities. That is where Kasten by Veeam can help.”

Advanced Backup Automation and Infrastructure Portability Capabilities Support Growing Kubernetes Adoption in Europe and Regional Data Sovereignty Laws

LOS ALTOS, CA – August 18, 2020 — /BackupReview.info/ — Kasten, the market leader for Kubernetes Data Management, today unveiled new automation and infrastructure portability capabilities for its flagship solution, the K10 Enterprise Data Management platform at KubeCon and CloudNativeCon Europe 2020. Purpose-built for Kubernetes, K10 provides enterprise operations teams with easy-to-use, scalable, and secure Kubernetes backup and restore, disaster recovery, and application mobility. The new capabilities will help organizations scale their cloud native infrastructure and Kubernetes applications in order to support global business growth and ensure compliance with regional data sovereignty laws, including GDPR.

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has noted that Europe has the highest rate of container adoption worldwide. The increased adoption of DevOps methodologies in the region as well as associated cloud native technologies like containers and Kubernetes is having a profound impact on innovation and business transformation. As a result, the demand for Kubernetes-native solutions that address key business challenges – such as Day 2 operational challenges like backup and portability of Kubernetes applications in production – is accelerating.

Because of the growing demand for solutions that support more robust cloud native environments, Kasten’s newest capabilities in the K10 Enterprise Data Management platform improve the automation of data management and simplify infrastructure portability across varying cloud environments and geographies. These include:

  • Automation with Policies: K10 supports extensible policies that provide consistency across a growing list of modern databases and storage infrastructures based on an application’s protection requirements. K10’s level of automation helps cloud and operations teams work seamlessly across multiple applications and apply forward-looking data policies that can automatically protect applications and ensure they comply with regional data regulations as they are deployed and scaled.
  • Infrastructure Portability:  K10’s Application Transformation Engine empowers CloudOps teams to provide application portability benefits at a massive scale – across infrastructures and storage systems as well as geographies and regions. This capability has been further enhanced with pre-built templates and expanded support for Azure disks, GCE Persistent Disks and AWS EBS.
  • Secure Self-Service: K10 introduces deeper RBAC integrations that improve self-service capabilities in Kubernetes. This provides teams with greater visibility and enhanced control over backup and disaster recovery policies for authorized applications to promote data protection and meet corporate and regulatory mandates.

“We’ve seen a rapid increase in demand for automated data management capabilities that can support operations across a growing deployment of cloud-native applications,” said Gaurav Rishi, head of product, Kasten. “K10’s automation workflows support massive scale and productivity gains to ensure that these capabilities can extend across all major Kubernetes distributions, both on-premises and public clouds. This also helps overcome the IT skills gap that is prevalent in Europe as much as it is elsewhere in the world. We recently had a large enterprise show us how just two of its ops team members were able to migrate and backup more than 170 diverse applications using Kasten K10 over a weekend.”

Kasten’s policy-based approach to Kubernetes data management is a major benefit for organizations faced with increasingly complex cloud-native deployments as the result of growth, regardless of staffing and scale. According to 451 Research’s Pathfinder Report: Kubernetes Backup and Application Portability — Modernizing Data Protection, a Kubernetes-native approach to security, data and application protection can reduce or eliminate some up-front challenges by using an automated, policy-based model. Portability is an additional major benefit of a containerized approach; it provides the ability to move applications across namespaces, clusters, regions, infrastructure providers or even different Kubernetes distributions.

“We selected Kasten K10 for its easy to use backups, simple UI interface, and cross-platform support for multiple clouds that could handle any type of workload,” said Moritz Kneilmann, Director Cloud Solutions, Demodern. “With our portfolio of global customers, having separate backups ensures that in case of disaster recovery each client has their own isolated environment, and K10 makes that possible with its very simple setup. It’s also useful for our developers to set up their own environments or have a ready to go production setup, which helps greatly to speed up the development cycle.”

Cloud-Native Transformation Framework with Application Transformation and Data Transformation Engines improves reliability, mobility, and automation for simplified Kubernetes data management

LOS ALTOS, CA – March 31, 2020 — /BackupReview.info/ — Kasten, the market leader for Kubernetes Data Management, today announced the general availability of Kasten K10 v2.5. Purpose-built for Kubernetes, K10 provides enterprise operations teams with an easy-to-use, scalable, and secure system for backup and restore, disaster recovery, and mobility of Kubernetes applications. The new release incorporates Kasten’s Cloud-Native Transformation Framework to enhance the automation and reliability of application and data migration in Kubernetes environments.

“Cloud-native is a critical part of the Kasten DNA, and we’ve developed the transformation framework to optimize the benefits of Kubernetes application backup and mobility at scale,” said Gaurav Rishi, Head of Products, Kasten. “Our Kubernetes-native data management capabilities have created a new standard for data security, reliability, and performance in the backup and disaster recovery market. This has been instrumental in our customers’ efforts to protect data and accelerate workload migration.”

Traditional backup and disaster recovery solutions do not work in today’s cloud-native environments resulting in scalability issues and data loss. Kasten K10’s Cloud-Native Transformation Framework introduces new capabilities as part of its Application Transformation Engine that captures both underlying data and metadata for application backup and mobility in Kubernetes environments. These include parallel data transfers, lock-free algorithms, pluggable encryption and compression, advanced deduplication, and smaller fault domains that ensure backup efficiency and increased reliability for cloud-native applications and infrastructure.

K10’s new Data Transformation Engine also introduces additional metadata capabilities, such as intelligent resource transforms, that reduce the manual effort, complexity, and risk associated with migration of data, and workloads between Kubernetes environments. This critical capability simplifies backup and restore and disaster recovery, enabling enterprises with improved flexibility and adaptability by taking captured data and making it suitable for use in a different destination than where it originated.

“We initially started using Kasten K10 for backup and disaster recovery, but as its new capabilities for data migration were added, we’ve been able to apply it to successfully migrate hundreds of projects from not just OpenShift 3.11 to OpenShift 4.2 but also across storage systems,” said Michael Courcy, Architecte DevOps, Sopra Steria. “K10’s migration and intelligent transform capabilities delivered a powerful but simple, reliable and secure solution that matched our scalability needs as we made major updates to our infrastructure.”

K10’s application-centric approach and deep integrations with relational and NoSQL databases, Kubernetes distributions, and all clouds give IT teams the freedom of infrastructure choice without sacrificing operational simplicity. Policy-driven and extensible, K10 provides a native Kubernetes API and includes features such as full-spectrum consistency, database integrations, automatic application discovery, multi-cloud mobility, and a powerful web-based user interface.
