Now powered by the latest version of Ceph, DreamObjects offers customers increased cluster capacity and support for new features

LOS ANGELES, CA – Dec 8, 2016 — / — DreamHost®, a global leader in web hosting and cloud services for entrepreneurs and developers, today announced key improvements to DreamObjects, the company’s secure open source cloud storage hosting service powered by Ceph. Like a file system with infinite capacity, customers use DreamObjects to build cloud-ready applications and to store documents, photos, songs and backup taking advantage of its Amazon S3 API compatibility. This upgrade utilizes Ceph’s major Jewel release, the newest version of the distributed object store and file system that is enabling DreamObjects to be even more scalable, reliable, and high performing.

The new version of Ceph serves as a building block for the DreamObjects multi-site feature, which has been almost completely re-architected and rewritten to now support any number of clusters or sites, as well as bi-directional failover and active/active configurations. This important DreamObjects upgrade also means that the AWS4 authentication protocol is now supported, providing additional security and compatibility when interfacing with Amazon S3. Other new feature highlights include static file hosting that allows for a DreamObjects bucket to be transformed into a web server capable of serving HTML files, and bucket expiration for removing buckets at predetermined times.

“With DreamObjects’ new technical enhancements, the object storage service’s massive capacity to scale and deliver features our customers desire just got a little more massive and feature-packed,” said Jonathan LaCour, VP, Cloud, DreamHost. “We have Ceph — which was originally developed here at DreamHost and is a kind of sibling project to DreamObjects — to thank for the many new capabilities our inexpensive, efficient service is now able to deliver.”

“DreamObjects has played an essential role as a scalable, accessible, and affordable cloud storage option for our image management service,” said Pedro Verruma, founder, rethumb. “The open source solution is delivering both simplicity and peace of mind by handling data at any scale we could need, offering S3 compatibility, and providing straightforward billing with no added costs. We’re excited for this key upgrade, and look forward to continuing to benefit from DreamObjects as an advantageous storage solution for our business.”

With the DreamObjects code base now upgraded to the Ceph Jewel release, the capacity of DreamObjects clusters has also been boosted by 7% — a welcome increase that allows DreamHost several additional months before needing to execute a data center expansion in order to meet storage demand.

New customers can try DreamObjects free for 30 days and take advantage of the latest additions to DreamHost’s scalable open source storage solution.
